  • Hi from newby with Questions

Hi everyone, for my first post I may as well hit you with the questions !! I have been on the outside looking at your forum for a while and have taken the plunge and bought an EM6910 and EM0480 grinder the other day, armed with a big bag of cheap beans I have been trying to perfect the pour, but no matter what I do I cannot get the machine to deliver a dose at anywhere near 25 seconds with the gauge at around 2.30. I have searched the forum, adjusted from fine to coarse, checked all the common faults with the grinder (as suggested on the forum). With the grinder set on 10, using the single cup in the PF, loading half then tamping then loading and tamping again hard with the level just touching the screen the best I get is the gauge at 12 oclock and about a 10 second pour for about 40mls with the coffee bubbling and spitting into the cup, not the nice straight trickle I would expect. I would have expected to just about stall the machine. Any suggestions as what to do next would be greatly appreciated, regards Brett

Where did the big bag of beans come from?
    How fresh are they?
What does the ground coffee feel like when rubbed between your fingers?
    Sand? Salt? Castor sugar?

Ive been playing with a 6900 I found at work and arent having any problem.
I forgot to go one notch finer on the grind this morning but using the single basket worked perfectly (I prefer doubles).

If the pour is fast the grind is too course.

    (Welcome by the way.)

The beans are a 1kg bag of Medaglia Doro from coles ????(freshness who knows) and I would say the grinds feel like caster sugar. I have been down to 0 where the grinds come out of the grinder in clumps but still no stalling of the machine. and at 20 the coffee just pours out of the machine and is very watery in taste with the gauge at about 9.00 oclock.

Brett, this is one of the worst and most stale coffees I have ever been unfortunate enough to try. Im afraid to say, but with this one, you have no hope....

Hey I never said I was drinking them, just practicing and turfing. so will better quality beens make a huge difference to the pour rate. If so then it is down to buy some better beens. Being 1400klms from Perth things get a bit limited up here in Tom Price.

            Yes, a huge difference.

I keep left over grinds to season the machine after cleaning.

The original fresh grind made nice coffee but after a week the same coffee gushes thru like Niagara falls.

You might need to roast our own.

Hey there Brett, welcome to the forum.

Youd still be better served by purchasing beans from a site sponsor or even our own Brown Bay. Theyd still beat anything from the stupidmarket in regards to freshness!

Brett0004, try brownbay or some of the site sponsors. I got my first batch of fresh beans through Go Barista. Ordered one day delivered the next. I know that wont be the same for you being so far away from anything
I am sure someone in WA can help you with where to get good quick beans. You should be able to find someone to send you Roasted beans of the day.

and the I would say once youve go the hang of it. Start Roasting yourself

Re: Hi from newby with Questions

Hi Brett, welcome to the site and posting questions etc. Reading through the posts has helped me to learn all sorts of info about coffee. Some suggestions (take of leave them!):
                  1. EM 6910 comes with two sets of filter baskets. One set is designed to force brew pressure to be correct in the case of pre-ground beans etc. Try using them (dual floor).
                  2. read posts and practice frothing milk while you use up purchased beans.
                  3. keep practicing grinding and tamping, the effort wont be completly lost. swap between the two types of filter baskets.
                  4. when you have got milk going ok, practice latte art (whatever that is!)
                  5. post a question on this site asking where you can purchase fresh beans locally, if none locally, buy over internet (possibly from this site, I cant offer personel endorsement for brown beans, only because I roast green beans (some from this site, no problem)! If brown beans from this site are very poor, provide me with a hat, which I will eat as a fundraiser for the poor!)
                  6. treat all aspects of coffee experience as a learning journey, passionately enjoy with impassionate analysis
                  7. decaf may be a good idea!

Brett0004, despite current weather (no rain in Tom Price), you risk rain of responses, recommendations, being moved to another thread, pictures, offers. Ha, have fun.

Medaglia Doro.. I had to laugh ;D ;D ... not at the poster but these are the beans Alan Jones raves on about on 2GB... Medaglia Doro means Gold Medal in Italian he says... yeh whatever... As 2MCM says... YUCK and horribly stale.. and this is why you are having trouble obtaining a "quality" extraction... all the aroma, oils, CO2s are all gone and theres next to nothing left to extract other than swill!

At your location, Id be obtaining some greens and start roasting your own.... it would be a whole lot cheaper for you and you control the freshness... do some reading here about roasting and youll be on your way.... even if you start with a humble popper, you can learn alot here and migrate to a Heat Gun/\/Bread Maker setup (known as the Coretto) for larger, more controllable batches...
