  • EM6900 Needing a Restart?

Ive had a 6900 for 2 years now (second actual machine & this ones had to go in for a service).  Recently frustrated by what seemed to be inconsistency in the machine I nearly went & bought a Silvia, but after reading that others are getting reasonable coffee from the Sunbeam I persisted.  I did the following:

    1. Got fresh beans
    2. Performed cleaning on the machine
    3. Put the EM 0480 to setting 12 & poured a slightly choked coffee (for discard anyway).
    4. Set grinder to 13 & it didnt pour.
    5. Continued to increment grinder to 19 without any flow at all.
    6. Turned the machine off then on (computer restart style).
    7. Grinder on 19 still and the coffee poured awfully quickly (as expected on a plunger setting).

Has anyone else suffered this semingly hideous inconsistency?  Should I call Sunbeam yet again?

    Thanks.

Obviously its stuffed, sunbeam do have a great exchange policy, if you take it back, providing its still under warranty, they should simply exchange it. On a personal note I dont hold much regard for them, I have one that I dont use my opinion is that they produce quite ordinary coffee. The group pressure is too high, and the water brew temp is all over the place, very important settings for making great espresso therefore rendering it quite ordinary.

I have had the same trouble, my grinder is all over the place, it depends on how fresh the beans are to which grinder setting you use. I do find that it does choke and gives a bad coffee. Most of the time I have to have the grind on 20 and it still take 35 seconds for the coffee to come through after the first 5 seconds to wait for the first coffee to flow through. I have done regular cleaning back flushing, de scaling it does not make any difference. I also clean my grinder out regularly. At least I get a coffee. I have had coffee from a Silvia and I can see why you would want one.

Things to consider is humidity and bean age and bean type...

I dont experience these issues though...

Sounds like the old loose bottom burr problem in the grinder to me

Thanks for the feedback. The reason I didnt suspect the grinder is that I left the grind the same so that the restart was the only difference between the choked & free-flowing pour.  Ill do some more research on the loose burr to see if thats impacting things. When it was working consistently, I noticed I had to make the grind finer as the beans aged, thats why I went with fresh beans to remove that variable too.

I reckon Ill contact Sunbeam & see what they have to say (it has been 2 years since I first acquired it, so well over the 12 month warranty).

            Thanks again
