  • New to this!

Hi all, am new to the site but not to coffee. Have been working my way through bad machine after bad machine, each time learning more about coffee brewing techniques than I ever thought. Then I came across this site!

Past machines include a krups (craps), sunbeam and saeco via vianeza. I think Im ready for a Silvia! I have a DeLonghi KG 100 grinder, and have found it to be ok.

When I purchase the Silvia, will the grinder cut it?

Glad to see your going to join the Silvia Club, its a great machine, I went from a Via Venezia to Silvia and the difference is amazing. Try your grinder, if it doest suit upgrade to something better.
    cheers

Be very patient with Silvia.  She is an amazing machine. The grind is very important so you will need to work out what is best, then the tamping is also important.  The secret is in this combination.  The next step will be to work out the best time to turn on the brew switch.     All this takes creative patience and she always performs well.  I have had my silvia/socky for 11 months.  I have saved twice its price in making our own coffee to a standard I think is better than most coffee shops.  But ALWAYS remember to recharge the boiler after each steaming.
It was a really great investment, great coffee and great fun.
My frothing could be better - but I am satisfied most of the time.

        Hi AromaRoberts,

Silvia demands a good grinder. Very unlikely you will get satisfactory results from KG100, possibly leading to incorrect dissatisfaction with Silvia.
Please allow for a better grinder if you are going to purchase a Silvia,
even if you have to get second hand Silvia, she is built like a tank after all and there are frequent offers of good units on this site.
Recommend you give consideration to a Rocky or better, they will last a long time, and perform well for Silvia.

        Regards
        Bullitt

Hi Dumiya, I understand what you say about steaming milk with Silvia it took me ages to learn how to get consistently good milk. I still get the occasional bubbly brew if I cant find the sweet spot quickly, but usually I get a lovely textured smooth microfoam. There are some videos on U-tube which may help with a few clues. Search for Rancilio Silvia and a heap come up on google.
