  • take the pressure down

    Hi All

its been 4 weeks living with the silvia and i think im ready for a tinker.

Id like to run a pressure guage to see what its running at the momnet, and adjust to the desired 9 BAR (ive read that the come from the factory with anything up to 12 BAR...its this rubbish?). if anyone in perth has a pressure guage they want to lend me it might be worth a bag of beans...unless the cost of a pressure guage is less than a bag of beans, then i suppose i should just buy one.

Ive been thinking about it, and if the pressure is reduced would it not result in a lower temp a the head and require a slightly rougher grind? or it that the point? or am i totally wrong?

any advice appreciated, especially if youve already gone john farnham of your silvia and taken the pressure down.

    Re: take the pressure down

I am interest to know why you want to fiddle with the pressure?
Are you having a problem with the results as it stands.
It may not be the pressure if you are.

          Re: take the pressure down

Depends on how recent your Silvia is.

The units that do not have the adjustable OPV were typically shipped set at anything up to 12bar,...... who knows why
The OPV was fitted with one copper gasket, and adding a second gasket would reduce to close to 9 bar, or better still get one of the special slightly flexible thick gaskets from Coffeeparts which will allow some adjustment of pressure......
which means you need some sort of gauge to read the pressure.
Brew pressure is best somewhere around 9 bar, .......12bar means you have to grind finer, or the pour time is short, and the shots tend to be slightly less sweet.
(Both myself and RH thought that shots were a bit sweeter after we replaced the copper gasket with the special thick one from Coffeeparts, subsequent testing has indicated my Silvia is brewing close to 9 bar, and his close to 10 bar, so we intend to do some more fiddling with his Silvia)

The later and current Silvias are fitted with an adjustable OPV which should have been set at 9bar if you got her from a reputable supplier. I have no info on what the factory range of settings is with these, but hope they are closer to 9 bar ex factory than they used to be.
