Hi
I have a couple of weeks ago bought a Sunbeam 6910 and the 480 grinder and was wondering how others were going with this machine. Some of the questions are quite similar to those already asked on the forums.
Basically as a test, I bought some beans off the coffee guy who sells coffee from a van at work, only so that I could try to recreate the same taste at home as I am familiar with his coffee taste... but cant even get close to that.
Things I have tried:
1) Using the 25-30 second rule... I have been reading the forums and other things about the 25 second pour etc. but because the 6910 is basket is bigger than the standard double (apparently anything between 21 - 28g depending on who you listen to, where the standard is 14g) so I guess that rule no longer applies? What is the rule then?
2) I went out and got me a snazzy Pullman Tamper too.
3) I have tried jamming a standard basked into the handle, which just fits but then am unable to screw the handle onto the head.
4) Have also tried dosing less (to get the 14g) so that the 6910 basket is only just more than 3/4 full, but that creates a sludgey puck and the taste is still different.
5) The coffee guy suggested doing a Ristretto type shot, i.e cut off the pour early... but no joy.
My tamp is quite hard.
Also what do people reckon about the pressure dial, is it worth following, i.e is the sweet-spot as labelled actually the sweet spot?
My grind settings are around the 20 mark (on the 480 grinder) anything below 18, and I dont get anything which is strange as the book reckons it should be around 11 - 15. I know another guy with the same setup and they have theirs set to 24+ to get anything coming out!
Another thing is the size of the pour... out of the box the machine puts out I think 100ml for a double and 75 for a single (using the double and single buttons with no coffee in the handle). Is this about right?
I used to have an automatic Saeco Magic Roma and find that the coffee is not *that* much better either.
Sorry for all the questions...
