Hey, thankyou both for the words of wisdom. I was about to rush out in haste and buy one...

Im in Adelaide, but will be in Melbourne early next month, so may do a bit of shopping about then... I like the idea (and the substantial look of) of the Rancillo Sylvia.
There is so much more to this whole coffee business than i thought.
I hope youve seriously considered a decent grinder as well when considering the silvia. Its pretty much non-optional with the silvia.

I have had shots from a Spidem Automatica - absolute rubbish even with fresh beans. Very unimpressed, but then again super autos are not my cup of tea...so to speak. I was also unimpressed by the plastic overload of the machine.

    Cheers

Holly, there are a few Places in Adeliade where you can get a good deal on a machine.

Mark Barun at The Coffee Barun is here in Adelaide and would be worth giving a call. I have PMd you.

Hi Holly-go-lightly and welcome to CoffeeSnobs....

As lucinda said above.... they dont work very well and all except Jura are very unreliable.....

A Jura would be a good choice if you really need to go the super auto path (but will cost close to double what you are talking now dollar wise).... anything else will cost in down time and service....

Rather than buy one of these machines - pay a Barista to make you a coffee each morning.... even at an average cafe the coffee will be better and cost you less in the long run....

It doesnt take that much effort to learn how to use a more manual machine and the results are just so much better!- worth a thought

    Re: Spidem machines

To be honest, auto machines will not do what you want and the servicing is a big issue for the price range you are looking at. You spend a fortune on servicing and it will spend mor time in for servicing than on the bench.

For $1,000 you can get a Gaggia Classic and team it with an MDF (Gaggia) grinder or Iberital Challenge grinder.
The gaggia Classic is pretty close to push button and takes about ten minutes to heat up in the morning (when you are in the shower) After that it takes about 3 minutes to grind an pull a shot and a minute after that to steam your milk.

The next step up would be a Rancilio Sylvia and you could team it with the above grinders for a little over $1,000 or a Rocky Grinder for a couple hundred more.

My advice is to chat to a site sponsor - not sure where you are but there are plenty in Melbourne and Sydney, and then you can make up your mind from there.

    Spidem machines

    Hi all,
New to this forum, but interested in your comments on the quality of A Spidem Teevi (exclusive) auto machine.
I have around $1,000 to spend, and am after a coffee machine that can produce a lovely crema. I just am a sucker for a touch of the button scenario (aspecially at 6am and im too weary to do the stove-top deal anymore) but wary of future servicing.

    Thoughts?
    Advice?
