  • EM6910 single or double pour spout, difference?

Hi, so Ive been using my 6910 for about 2 months now which is a vast improvement on my old breville. Also have been using the double pour spout with Grahame still installed in the PF. ;D

Today I got around to removing Grahame and screwing on the single pour spout. That combined with some CS roasted Colombian beans I made probably close to the best coffee yet from it. Only problem is that   with the double pour spout, I used to be able to rest the PF on the sink and load it up and tamp without too much hassle. Now with the single pour spout on it, it obviously doesnt just sit there on its own.

Anyone have some suggestions for this newb?

i have same problm and so removed spout! no spout works the same and means you can tamp properly :-)

I dont like single spouts for the same reason, I have one PF with no spout I use when I (rarely) pull a single shot.

The way I used to tamp the single basket was by resting the front of the PF base onto the egde of a bench (so the spout is over the edge, and the handle is facing you) Push forward on the handle as you tamp and the PF shouldnt go anywhere (unless the bench has a curved edge... then onto the floor it will slide as you tamp )

I hope I explained that well enough...

        heres some pics.

Dont laugh too much at how I have my coffee. :-[ Feel free to comment/critique on anything you see.

This is what Im talking about. With the double spout on, it rests nice and straight which leaves both hands free. Also makes it easier to clean up doing it near the sink.

        Good colour or not?

This is supposed to be a shot of the pressure gauge mid-pour. Camera focused on the steam wand....my bad :-?

To tamp coffee, I recommend not to use the spouts as the base...it will go in to coffee grounds which will be all over your bench and make it in to your cup.

I use a tamp stand which keeps the spouts off the bench and straightens up my tamp significantly. If i dont have a tamp stand available, I will always place the portafilter on the bench so that the spouts hang off the bench. This will solve your problem with being unable to tamp for a single spouted poratfilter.

A picture is worth a thousand words

            Hi

I also mostly use the single spout. Ive just bought a Bumper tamping stand. Its made a huge difference - my tamp is a lot more even and Im a lot happier with my tamping overall. It cost $49.95 - well worth it for me at any rate.

I just use the rubber economy tamp mat from Coffeeparts...works a treat. The way of avoiding grounds on your spout is by keeping the mat clean. There is no reason to get grounds on it - knock them off into a bowl under the grinder or into the tray....

              Cheers

Those green A4 cutting mats from $2 shop work great too and are easy to come by.
I also like green better than black as its easier to see coffee that could end up on the spout.

I tamp with mine in a corner of the bench.
Works well with the naked PF too.

Where do you get these bumper tamping stands from?

I too tamp the way Wushoes says. I was taught it takes the pressure of the pouring spout.

It also stops the surface of your bench changing from a flat surface to a textured one over time

I dont think Coffeeparts have the bumper ones. The ones they have are different and cost I think $89.95. I dont think any of the sponsors sell the bumper stands - please, sponsors, correct me if Im wrong. As I didnt get mine from a sponsor I wont include my source here but you should be able to find a supplier using google or pm me.
