                Re: Recommend me a machine

                Hey again CoffeeSnobs

I was doing some more research through the forums and was particularly doing lots of reading on the Sunbeam EM6910 machine which sounded almost as good as the Rancilio. I still wanted the Silvia though, and had all but decided to buy it and then get a grinder later.

But...Ive just found out that a family friend has access to a 40% staff discount at Sunbeam. So Im going to go for the EM6910 machine and EM0480 grinder combo. For the money (should be well under $500 for both, compared to $1200ish for the equivalent Rancilio combo) I cant pass it up. And I figure Ill be better off with a slightly lesser machine and freshly ground coffee then the best machine let down by inferior coffee (because Im too tight to shell out for a grinder.)

                Thoughts?

Thanks for the info, education and advice guys - this site is a ripper.

                    Re: Recommend me a machine

                    Great price tremolo!

But - if youre using the machine mainly for espresso/ristretto, you may be disappointed. I dont have the most attuned palette but can detect a bit of sourness in most shots from the Sunbeam. I bought the SB combo expecting this, and it doesnt bother me since I rarely drink coffee without milk.

That said, Im sure youre right that the SB combo will serve you better than the Silvia and preground - and at $400 for both, youll probably make your money back if/when you do upgrade!

Yes, M@ you make a good point - I find the Sunbeam Espresso shots a tad sour also. And thats with the temp all the way up to 96deg.

You have read that the grinder is more important than the machine havent you?

You may be cursing that grinder purchase in a few months.

                          Re: Recommend me a machine

Why?  Ive read only favourable reviews on both this site and others?

                          http://www.coffeeco.com.au/articles/sunbeamgrinder.html

To be honest I cant possibly see how I will regret it. Ive never used a grinder before and Ive never had a machine of this quality before. All Ive had is my little $200 entry level Krups machine and preground coffee. So its going to be a massive improvement actually.

It may not make the best espresso in the world but I am a relative newbie to all of this and thus Im unlikely to be able tell the difference. I also dont have several thousand dollars to spend ($500 was my budget, which Ive decided to stick to as I have a house to renovate and a car to modify ). Considering Im able to get a decent grinder and machine within my budget Im stoked.

Lucinda, to be fair, that price range he got for the Sunbeam gear is a great start and will do tremolo really well. Youve made a major setup up and the quality of coffee will be a huge step up - You may need to get yourself some training though to get the best out of the new gear you have.

                            Have fun.

PS... Having kids stopped my car modifying days for now :-( I miss my Rx7 :-(

                              Re: Recommend me a machine

I am not disregarding the 6910, it is a great machine.

My issue is with the grinder. I would say with the money saved on the 6910 to go out and get an Iberital challenge minimum.

The issues with the EM0480 are pretty well known by now , there are many threads about this - the burr sets issue is the major one and many threads are testamount to this.

Just trying to save you some heartache and $$ in the long run. Miser that I am, I hate having to replave things even if they werecheap at the time. Its false economics.

                                Lucinda,

How much is a Challenge?? $300 thereabouts? If Tremolo only had $500 as a budget, then you can forget the Challenge.

For the record, Ive had my EM0480 for about 18months now and not 1 problem Ive had with it. Sure, the steps are a tad large, but that aside, its been a great grinder for me. Not only that, I think the newer releases have addressed the issues of not grinding fine enough.
