    Re: Recommend me a machine

agree with both Lucinda and Marc...
since i have Ms Carimali doing the grind-and-bump on my beans, the Botts coffee is consistently better, rounder, more viscous, not sour, just generally great!
when i had Mr Rocky i managed to get the occasional god-shot and only if the temperature & humidity in the bus didnt fluctuate too much, otherwise i was chasing my tail the whole day.
Ms Carimali produces grinds which are more even, i suppose, and possibly the solidity of her build makes her less impervious to those atmospheric conditions.

even though i was lucky enough to procure ms Carimali for a ridiculously low price from one of the Cash-diddlers stores, her performance has now totally convinced me that a great grinder can produce great coffee with just about any machine or plunger...
whereas the reverse is probably not the case!

if i had to start again with my round of research and purchases, i would go for the best grinder i could possibly afford, and couple it with a plunger and stove-top, later to be complemented by a machine, once funds allowed.

If you keep reading through the threads here, over and over the advice is to get the best quality grinder you can, and to me the 6910 would produce better coffee if you used a better grinder, especially if people are saying it is producing sour shots.
This is true. My Super Jolly does improve the coffee from my EM6910 - but that comes at serious cost. :-) But the sourness is still a little there - but still quite acceptable and improvements were made when using the SJ.

I bought a Sunbeam grinder for work and a few weeks later got myself an MDF.
    I use the MDF now.
Its cleaner, quieter, faster and doesnt leave heaps of coffee behind in the chute like the Sunbeam did.

Justification 1: It is not of the quality of the higher end grinder, and will need replacing sooner rather than later thus costing more $$$

Justification 2: More consisantly ground coffee resulting in better shots.

Justification 3: Start roasting your own beans its much cheaper (savings of about 60%) and all you need to start with is a $30 popcorn popper and some green beans.

    Justification 4: Its nearly christmas

Thanks Lucinda, I wasnt aware of these issues.

It just comes down to cost really. If I can justify it Ill do it for sure.

Basically, Java B has said it all.

The Iberital Challenge and the Gaggia MDF, both priced at about $300 are the lowest I would recommend at present because they have metal burrs.

I have an MDF and would recommend that from personal experience, but apparently they are still being shipped from Italy. Hazbean, one of our other members has had his MDF fifteen years and they are pretty well built. I dont know much about the Iberital challenge but others who have them say they are very good for a base machine.

The next step up is the rocky.

JavaB, there is no new EM0480 model I have been reliably informed. I do know that they have made some corrections to the current EM0480. My only real gripe is the steps are too large to dial in for perfect espresso :-( But my Super Jolly handles most espresso now, and the EM0480 is use everyday for Decaf.

Not really. My budget was always $500 but I was willing to stretch to $700 odd if it was justified.

Given that the consensus is that a Silvia (or any machine at this level) would be wasted without a grinder I was going to just cough up and get the Silvia/Rocky...but then I found out I can get a nearly-as-good machine AND grinder for $500. Ive only read good things about it so Ive got no reason to spend an extra couple of hundred bucks to have a "better" grinder.

What exactly is wrong with the SB grinder lucinda?
Well that changes my opinion a bit... and edge towards what Lucinda suggested and get the challenge with the left over money from the EM6910 purchase..

I hate it when someone moves the goal posts!

Well Im not lucinda..... but Ill give my 2c worth.

The 6900 (original coffee machine) is generally considered a disaster - whilst the 6910 has addressed the issues and has been very reliable....

If you do a search on this site you will find many, many people who have had problems with the grinder creeping ever and ever coarser as you use it.... so you need to dial ever an ever lower numbers to keep the grind correct - and eventually you run out of adjustment..... some have actually had the reverse experience where it has become coarser....

Lots have been returned to Sunbeam for rectification under warranty - just like the 6900s were.

The burr carrier assembly is made out of relatively soft plastic and the burrs bed in more as you use the grinder..... They are potentially a respectable (not good) espresso grinder - but with reliability concerns. They wont last anywhere near as long as the grinders lucinda suggested.... so the total cost of ownership (over a few years) would be higher than a better (read more expensive) grinder....

Rumour has it that Sunbeam will be bringing out a new model to replace the 0480.... maybe 0481???? which will address the problems....

But IMHO you cant compare the Sunbeam to a Rocky (or other more expensive grinders) other than to say they do a pretty good job for the price - whilst they work that is.

And the most important tool for making good coffee is the grinder.... far, far more important than the machine itself... So it is definitely worth spending a bit more on the grinder if you can afford to (it will save you in the long run).

To get back on topic, Tremolo had the $$ to buy  the sylvia/rocky package. Which to me means he has the $$ to spend on a decent grinder. $359 + $300 = $659. This is Less than the price of a Sylvia so he is still ahead.

Marc, you must be one of the very few people who has not had an issue with the EM0480 grinder - though I notice that you also have a Gino Rossi grinder and a super Jolly. Why do you have these if the EM0480 is good enough?

My understanding was Tremolo got all of it @ 40% off. Not just the Machine.

So, you get 40% off $599 = $359. That leaves $141 to buy a grinder. I cant see $300 to buy a grinder. This is my point. For $500, to get both Grinder and Machine is a bargin and will do well with it.

re: RX7, hehe, 219 rear wheel kilowatts, driven everyday isnt exactly economical, but it sure its fun in a 1000kg car :-) So yeh, my wallet is heavier for it - but then came my coffee hobbie :-)
No such thing as an economical rotor - regardless of power! 219rwkw would more than make up for it though.
Slightly Disagree :-) I had a Rx7 with a 6port 12a a few years back and Id get 400kays to the tank... not bad for carby sold school power. My 219rwkw rx7 wasnt far off... more like 330 per tank It would see 8000rpm at LEAST once in the day. All 80s technology though.

Anyway, better get back on topic :-)

Na man, the RX8 is firmly on my radar. :-)

Rx2, 3, 4 were family rotary power. And really missed :-(
