Re: Sunbeam 6910
Welcome, and congrats on the purchase!
Hes not exaggerating! Youll wonder how you ever drank the other stuff.Originally posted by Mal link=1196254491/0#10 date=1196339877You really do need to grab some high quality freshly roasted beans from a reputable specialist roaster close to home, or from one of our terrific site sponsor roasters here on CS. You will be blown away by the difference in quality, absolutely no comparison 8-).
I recommend the CS Brown roasted sample pack: http://beanbay.coffeesnobs.com.au/Vi...ct.aspx?ID=118
5 x 200g bags of randomly selected roasted beans (not 4 x 250g like the description says).
The small valved+ziplocked bags means theyll keep fresh for a little longer than a single 500g/1kg batch.
*edit*: actually I just received another sample pack and this time its 4 x 250g bags.
Provided you can get your parameters (grind/dose/tamp/etc) to a level where youre producing consistent shots, youll be treating yourself to a range of bean origins and flavours (and supporting CoffeeSnobs too I guess).
Just remember that the optimal grind will usually vary between each type of bean...and could also vary between all the days that it takes you to finish that batch!
Happy times
Paul

Whoa! Not bad?Originally posted by mark of bellmere link=1196254491/0#9 date=1196339042Have been using Gloria Jean beans and cheap woolies beans as a practice. They arent that bad.

This is a VERY general description and not altogether very helpful but described in equally vague terms, a Medium Roast is one that has been pulled well before 2nd-Crack and around abouts the CS7 mark on the CS Members Card.Originally posted by mark of bellmere link=1196254491/0#9 date=1196339042What is the diffrence between dark roast and medium roast?
A Dark Roast is one that has been taken right to the edge of 2nd-Crack with perhaps the first few snaps being heard and at around the CS9-10 mark on the CS Members Card. Hope that helps a bit

Mal.

Just followed point 2 - there was a lot of gunk under the insert. YUK

Re: Sunbeam 6910
I actually found that the shortest pump recovery was the best for texturing, even thought that wet it out a bit...you will need to experiment to see whats suits you best.
Cheers

Re: Sunbeam 6910
Congrats on the new machine mate and welcome to CoffeeSnobs.
May I offer you some helpful hints to start you off with the 6910.
1. You should have received 4 filter baskets, 2 x pressurised baskets (lots of holes on the inside and 1 hole on the bottom outside) and 2 x standard baskets (lots of holes you can see light through) You should have a single and a double basket of each. Take the Presurrised baskets and through them in the bin or if the wife doesnt let you then throw them to the back of the cupboard. Trust you will get better coffee pours with the standard filters (Also look up posts on this topic.)
2. If you follow suggestion 1 above then also look at your portafilter and you will see a black plastic insert inside. Remove this by inserting screw driver into the middle hole and gentle lifting the black insert out. This is only there if you intend to you use the presurrised baskets to prevent coffee gushing out the spout. This traps coffee underneath and makes your coffee yuk if not removed and cleaned reguarly.
3. Look at your manual and re-program your sunbeam to the DRYEST Steam Setting and the HOTTEST Group Head Tempurature These will improve your Milk texturing with the steam being a lot dryer and better temperature water coming out at the group head into your portafilter.
If you follow these first 3 steps you are on your wway to improving your coffee making.
Good luck and happy coffee making.

Its probably only a matter of time before you are wondering what corretto means!!!
I highly recommend the Sunbeam course - its free, and if you are a novice home Barista, you will pick up heaps of tips. And get to drink heaps of free coffee!

Re: Sunbeam 6910
Congratulations on your new toys, they can be frustrating until you get your methodology sorted out but it will be worth the effort.
What beans are you using?
And welcome to CoffeeSnobs.

Sunbeam 6910
I am new to the forum so I thought I might share my excitement as I picked up my first expresso machine on Friday along with the grinder. After following the discussion here and elsewhere, boring my wife with fascinating facts about tamps and portafilters I settled on the Sunbeam 6910 and a 480 grinder.
The weekend was an experience for all as I used 4L+ of milk and 500g+ of beans. Most of the family couldnt sleep after the caffeine dosing they received.
I am getting reasonably consistent shots and am still fiddling with the tamp. I didnt realise the "science" involved!
Instant coffee just doesnt cut it any more.
