hugz Id be putting down your roller shutters quick mate! Theres a member here by the name of lucinda who is our resident Gaggia Classic fanatic, and even though youre in Brissy and shes a SA girl, she may just be inclined to an fury-driven interstate trip with that comment! ;D

well, umm, you see the thing is that i must surely be so used to the quirkiness of the silvia that i can no longer operate a straight forward and, frankly, perfect machine such as the gaggia classic

      *cough*

[I imagine theres a degree of truth there. ive probably largely forgot how to use it]

edit: oh, and by the way my grinder is currently at rancilio being repaired. i initially called them up and the rancilio essentially said "no no, your grinder isnt broken. its your beans" (in a way that said "our gear is NEVER broken, its YOUR fault"). when i explained the problem to him and mentioned that my research on the internet has indicated that its a known fault that some people have, he laughed and responded "people on the internet have no clue"

I would like to hear more about your Rocky problems, mine has thread play which the distributor has deemed OK, so I use teflon tape on the carrier when I do a strip and clean. Would like to know if others have had more success with the powers that be.

the spouts on the silvia PF is very similar to that of the gaggia classic, in that they sort of.... come out as two different spouts. most professional ones seem to exit the PF as one spout and then split in two.

Silvias spout is a standard 3/8 thread, you can remove and screw whatever you want on, check out site sponsor coffeparts site.

Still learning Silvia myself but have found the Pullman Tamper matched to the ridgeless Synesso basket a good move.

Just a tip, Vicroamer, "red and green should never be seen, without something in between" --makes it hard to read your post.

Ever since i got the grinder its been unable to do a very good grind. the main problem is that its too course to be useful. From memory, at point "6" on the grinder, it will make a metalic crunching sound (when there are no beans inside). However, at point 6 it is still too course to make good coffee (i was extracting in like 5-10 seconds). I never had the guts to go below "6" for fear of damaging it. It seems safe to say, however, that if the burrs are so close that theyre starting to touch, it should be grinding fine.

Furthermore, from as far along as point 10 on the grinder, it makes a (soft) metalic grinding sound when the burrs are slowing down (ie when the button is released). This indicates to me that as the burrs lose inertia, they stop spining on a flat plain, and are instead wobbling around a bit.

It seems to me to be similar to a known problem with some rockys, in that the burrs arent properly aligned (or something). It may be the same problem that you have, as i know that many people have fixed theirs with teflon tape.

I sent my machine to the retailer, who tested it out and agreed that its grinding too course, so she sent it to rancilio. This was on tuesday. She said that they usually have a 2-3 day turn-around; however as of today (sunday) ive yet to hear back from her about it. Maybe theyre busy over xmas

You have to be careful not to confuse the sound of the Centrifugal Switch Mechanism (CSM) with that of the burr-plates touching. It is possible that as you wind the grind adjustment to a finer setting that the increased forces being developed result in the CSM generating some noise. This is nothing to be concerned about though and you can prove it one way or the other quite simply. "SAFETY FIRST" Before you start though, turn off the power to the grinder and remove the power plug.

First, remove the upper burr-carrier/hopper assembly and give the innards a good clean using a vacuum cleaner and a toothbrush to clean the upper burr-carrier thread and the housing thread. If there is a "Zero Safety Screw" inserted, this should be removed and then reinserted after this test if you so desire. After it is all nice and clean, refit the upper burr-carrier/hopper assembly and screw down until you feel the solid resistance of the two burr-plates coming together and note how this corresponds to the nominal Zero position on the Grind Setting Scale. This is your true zero.

From this position, wind the carrier assembly back out a bit until you are approx. eight(8) full graduations back from the true zero position. OK, plug the power cord back in and switch on then Run the grinder and listen for any sounds/noises being generated. You know the burr-plates are no longer touching having identified where true zero is but you may hear the sound of the CSM operating as the rotor builds up to speed and when you switch the grinder off, you will hear another sound as the rotor slows down and the CSM makes a kind of scraping noise all the way down until the rotor stops. All of this is quite normal and I guess that some grinders CSM will be a bit noisier than others but it is nothing to worry about.

I hope this helps you out mate, and all the best.....
                    Mal.
