  • Bought my sunbeam EM6910

I have bought the Sunbeam EM6910 with the grinder 480 conical burr with the cafe series bang bang. The Good Guys gave me a really good price. Bought the machine after reading all the reviews from this site and decided the 6910 fitted my budget best.

I have been reading a few articles on this machine here and one particular one indicated to throw away the pressurised basket and to lift out the black plastic think in the head. Is that right? Will it really make better coffee by using the normal baskets???

ANy tips on how to make good coffee will be great!!!!

    Welcome to Coffee Snobs oreochiu.

The black plastic thing (affectionately known here as "Graeme") can trap gunk underneath it.
You dont want to be drinking that.
The easiest way to remove it is to first take of the double spout then pinch the plastic and push it up and out.

The pressurised baskets are designed for preground supermarket purchased coffee (Im pretty sure it tells you that in the instruction book, so dig it out of the box and have a good read, theres lots of other good info in there).

To make a betetr coffee than most you would have bought to date you need freshly roasted beans that you grind a few seconds before making your coffee.

The 0480 and the 6910 can make a pretty good coffee when you get the hang of it.

I recommend you book in for the free course.

Yes, just read the manual and it says the pressurised one are for pre ground coffee. Just had a session of making coffee. I bought some beans and have been grounding it. According to the grinding machine manual it says around 5-12 for espresso which is what i set the machine to grind. I found that when using the 5 settng and tamping it real firmly, no water comes out from the machine at all.

Been using the bag of coffee and doing a trial and error and found that by making the coffee coarser and not taping it firmly the machine comes out with coffee. The instruction manual says the problem may be overload.. but i didnt think i can overload the basket with coffee.

Help... My first coffee felt a bit watery and didnt have the nice crema on top like how the coffee shops make it.. OBviously need more practice

      ANy advice will be appreciated

Dont worry, it will take a few tries to get the hang of the right combination of grind, volume, dose and tamp. To start with, use the same tamp pressure each time - grab a set of bathroom scales and aim for somewhere between 10 and 15kg (pick a number but use the same each time). Do this several times and youll quickly get the hang of what sort of force you need. Use the same dosing technique, exactly the same, each time, and then adjust just the grinder until youve got the right pour. After this you can start working on improving your dosing technique and messing around with other factors, but the golden rule is to only change one variable at a time - that way you pretty well know whats causing the changes - I read your post as that it choked so you ground coarser AND tamped lighter and now its too fast; one at a time, and then only in small degrees.

        Good luck!

Congratulations. The EM1690 is a great machine. It has taken me a while to get the hang of it but more good coffee is produced than bad these days.
I practiced on cheap beans first and went through a lot of milk as well.
I have just purchased the tasting pack from Coffee Snobs ( it arrived in a cloth bag) . The fresh beans of better quality make all the difference!

Cheap beans for practising are a false economy.
You dont learn much because they dont behave like fresh beans.
And fresh beans are what you are trying to learn to use.

              Well chosen!

All I can add at this stage (when you are messing around with grind and tamp etc) is to watch the pressure carefully - if the needle goes beyond the end of the red for more than a few seconds stop the shot or you are likely to blow the seal!

May all your shots be good ones (even the average ones ;D)

                True.
I aim for just into the red.
