    I have a buddy in the same predicament....Hes lucky...

    Every now and then...i roast fresh beans for him and grind using my rancilio rocky.

    He does toss me a "bone" for costs every now and then but i feel it necessary

    to let him come close to a true experience of what good espresso tastes like.

    When i dont do all this for him ...he heads down to the local roaster and they have

    a commercial bunn grinder. THe owner sets the machine in ranges of 2.3-2.7 and

    with these setting adjustments with mostly african beans single origin ie. kenya,

    yirgeffe,sidamo,sumatra his shots either "choke" or come out in 1oz for 30second

    pull or the typical 2oz-2.5oz for 25-30seconds pulls.

    Try and find a local roaster..and play with the grind settings he/she does for you.

    Gaggias are very finicky. My buddy chokes his machine on one setting and then

    only one level setting above his shot is perfect...go figure.

    You might want to give SUmatra a go....

    ps. My buds had the issue of his grind losing freshness after a few hours. His

    subsequent shots would lose all qualities of freshness and come out like watery.

    BUT...hes managed to avoid somewhat by purchasing a starfrit vac lock container.

    It only costs like 3-6 bucks depending on what you get but its air tight.

    The truth is - the coffee GJs and Starbucks uses in the shop is different to the crap they sell for home use. It still tastes awful but it is different.

    Milk also does not disguise the terrible flavours from bad coffee. If anything, it will enhance it as the cream(fat content) in milk carries flavour. Sugar might disguise it though.

    It sounds to me like your parents really do not want to put in the effort in order to appreciate real coffee and you may not be able to convince them of the benefits of fresh ground beans etc etc

    Save them the money, keep the Gaggia Baby for yourself and get a good grinder for it and just give them a jar of instant or a plunger. Then they can go to GJs etc and have nice coffee there when they want.

    Sounds harsh I know, but some people do not want to go to the bother/expense and its no use trying to get blood out of a stone.

    You might not be able to convince them until you get your rocky and show them the difference a good grinder makes.

    Preground coffee goes stale very quickly.

    I can get a good pour out of coffee ground in the morning and the same batch 8 hours later is watery rubbish.

    You have no guarantee that preground from a coffee shop will be the correct fineness for your parents machine.

    If its too course you will still have the same problem.

    I must admit, the machine is my parents (which I did buy for them )

    So in terms of the whole coffee/crema thing, Theyre going to need a bit of convincing to even buy a crappy burr grinder .... The coffee itself isnt horrible. We mostly make cappucinos (around 4-6per day on average, sometimes more), so the milk masks any bad coffee flavour/taste (and the gaggia makes a great froth!). Im thinking the best thing may be to purchase a small amount of pre-ground coffee from a proper coffee shop, test it out with a good crema, and that might be enough to convince them to get a burr grinder. Maybe once they have finally tasted a good coffee (which sometimes is hard to come by, as they often frequent gloria jeans/starbucks), they might make their decision!

    Myself on the other hand, am saving up for a decent coffee/grinder combo (silvia+rocky) after I transfer to Melbourne for work....

    Another thing is you quite possibly may be underdosing and using the crappy tamper you have, cannot compress the puck (coffee) enough to give the water any resistance..

    You need to get a decent tamper and a decent burr grinder.

    The cheapest grinder you need to look at is a gaggia MDF or a Iberital challenge priced at about $300. If you cannot afford this at this time, contact one of the site sponsors who are roasters and get some freshly roasted beans from them - Brown bay is a good starting point. Keep away from Gloria Jeans or supermarket coffee, it will be stale and disgusting.

    For a tamper I would suggest a Pullman tamper (site sponsor ) or if you do not have the $$ contact one of the site sponsors and get your self a decent Stainless steel tamper that will suit you machine.

    Also, how often do you maintain, ie descale and clean your machine? It should be done at least once a month, and that means putting descaler through the boiler (caffetto is the best for Gaggia), removing the shower screen and cleaning it and cleaning the group head.

    Thats the bare minimum I have to tell at the moment. There is other stuff that can be done to fix these, but these are the basics.

    Gaggia Baby D crema

    Hi guys,

    My first post on here, but Ive been floating around for a while. I bought a gaggia baby d around 6 months ago, and the coffee is quite good (better than the previous cheapo sunbeam).
    Now Im finding that the coffee comes out very watery, and only takes about 3-5 seconds before you get that blondy stream of coffee/water. There is also barely any crema.

    Now, I understand this is most likely due to the coffee/grind I am using? I do tamp the coffee with the standard plastic tamper. We have tried pre-ground gloria jeans coffee AND pre-ground supermarket coffees and it produces the same effect. We have also ground coffee at home, with a cheap grinder, but the effect is the same. The coffee comes out watery.

    What should I do, to get that crema so many of you talk about?
