    Re: Problems with EM6910 or EM0480 ??

My Sunbeam 6910 (or is it a 6900?) has finally had enough! It wont produce any steam and is leaking.

I havent called Sunbeam as Im dreading jumping through their hoops. Besides, it was a good excuse to bring the giotto back home and look for a nice machine for the roastery!

          Hello all,
          PROBLEM SOLVED(i think)!!!
Its amazing how much of a difference FRESH coffee beans actually make. Not only does it taste better, i now get better extraction with even a courser grind.
Only problem I have is with the crema produced, it looks sensational as it pours but it soon dissapears to a very thin layer. Is this ok ???
Here are some pics... let me know if it looks normal....

I dont think that crema in the second pic could be called "a very thin layer".

Yeah your right thundergod, i was not trying to illustrate my problem with the pics but just show what i produced with fresh beans.
With the crema, say after about 2-3 minutes the crema will be much thinner. Somebody once told me that sugar should be able to sit on top of the crema..

Hi Ken, theres nothing wrong with that crema, and its quite normal for it to settle with time although it will vary with different beans............... Ray.

2-3 minutes, how can you expect any crema to stand up?

If youre talking about crema splitting after 30 seconds after extraction...fair enough...the reason for this is because the coffee is TOO fresh.

Im with David...2-3 minutes? What do you expect?
My coffee doesnt last that long.

If youre going to try the sugar thing you should try it almost straight away.

takes me 2-3 minutes to get the milk ready...

In that case make the milk first.

Or, get everything ready before you hit the switch on the 6910

This is my routine that I use with the same equipment -

Set up P/F into the machine (without coffee in it) and then run a shot into the cup. Place cup on top of machine (to warm it up first).
While the warm up shot is running start grinding the beans until there is enough for the shot you want to make.
Take P/F out and wipe clean them dose and tamp the P/F.

With the coffee dosed / tamped in PF but not loaded into the machine load the milk into pitcher, thermometer at the ready (if you use one).
Place PF into machine and press brew button
Whilst that is starting, open steam valve and start on the milk
When your shot has finished, put the cup back on top of the machine to help retain heat.

The milk should take roughly 90 seconds or so (I think, never have timed it) to steam up to temperature. That way, your shot has only been sitting around for approx 1 minute, and all the time has been in a pre-heated cup, and then on the warming tray of the machine, so temp loss should be kept to a minimum.

I may be telling you things that you already know / and are doing, if so, I apologise, but that routine works for me

yeah thats the process I use Senator. Thanks anyways!!!
I still think that my grinder is no good, I still need to use the finest grind setting to get a decent creamy shot otherwise there is hardly any pressure.

I have the same problem, apparently Sunbeam have a kit (comprising a couple of washers ) that theyll send out if you ask for it.
