  • EM6910-Filters hold too much coffee???

Hi Guys, I was just wondering, is it me or are the porta-filter baskets on the Sunbeam 6910 huge.......I find that i have to put about 14gr of coffee into the single basket to get a great pour. The only problem with that is that i get a ristretto rather than a short black. :-/

I was hoping some one has changed the baskets and can tell me which baskets to purchase.....

Cheers guys and glad to be a part of this forum

Hey clubbi4 welcome to the forum.

Most of the 6910 users here tend to updose on their machine anyway in order to get a great our. That seems to be the characteristic of the machine. So youll find that 14g or more is prob pretty normal.

      Welcome to Coffee Snobs.

Yes the 6910 baskets are large.
The newer ones are a little smaller.

Are you saying you dont like coffee?
I have a 6910 at work and use the old baskets for my doubles despite having the new ones as well.  ;D

Seriously though, have you tried a finer grind with less coffee?
That would have the same effect as a full basket at a courser setting.

But as E-Gene said updosing seems to work best.

The new double basket has a taper to it.
Sort of like the single basket tapers in but just a small amount of taper at the bottom.
The old double baskets were straight, top to bottom.

Look into the double basket, if you see it taper in its a new one.
The point where it starts to taper is very obvious. If its there you will notice.

With the up dosing, tweak the grind and the tamp, but at the end of a shot the puck should be reasonably firm, dry/some moisture cont and will bang out in one piece and usually remain together. You should be able to see some marking of the shower screen... Note: There is a fine balance between up dosng and OVER dosing..

Re: EM6910-Filters hold too much coffee???

The thing with the Em6910 is that fact the showerscreen is quite high... so updosing is a MUST

Re: EM6910-Filters hold too much coffee???

Yes the 6910 baskets are quite a bit bigger than your average 58mm PF but they were even bigger in the original 6900!

I got a 6910 earlier this year and find I would sometimes like to have a regular 7-9g single too - I use a commercial machine at work and prefer a standard short black in the afternoon. My singles are easily 12-14g too & yes I find updosing gives the best shots.

Ive searched the forums for a supply of compatible baskets for the 6910 but there seems to be no definitive best fit baskets out there.

Has anyone else managed to find a standard single basket that fits the 6910?

The Synesso Double Ridgeless - but its not smaller, but it is a better basket. I have found it seals up against the group seal better. See Pullman Tampers if youre interested.

Hi clubbi4 with the 6910 you need to use enough coffee to get the coffee to expand and sit up against the showerscreen .So when you take the puck out there should be a screw mark from the showerscreen screw. How hard you tamp and how fine you grind is up to you but these things affect your espresso.
What you want is a pour that delivers 30mls in 25sec.If you dont like the strong taste stop the shot shorter

Re: EM6910-Filters hold too much coffee???

Hello fello snobs, have been busy reading the volumes of information so this is my first post.

After reading reviews from CS I decifed the 6910 would be an ideal machine for my requirements and a wonderful step forward from my fast failing 4800 that was however still giving me nice shots, just leaking in some strange places!
Have had my new baby for a month now and while I love the taste of the shot I am a little concerned with the volume of beans I am going through.
I am using the 480 grinder and like some others, have had to set it to 4 to achieve a nice fine grind.
I got technical and measured the single shot basket contents and was surprised to see 15 grams on the scales.
For the first time in my life I am also a little concerned about my caffeine levels given that I normally treat myself to 4 or 5 lattes a day!
I have tried finer grind (2 & 3) with 10gm in the basket however, cant get a decent shot with reasonable crema and gauge doesnt make it past 9 oclock.
I spoke to my local bean supplier who was astonished and reassured me that 15grams was a commercial double shot.
Given that they dont sell Sunbeams he just quashed it as an inferior machine. He assures me the Sylvia they sell only requires 7-8 grams for the single shot.
Any suggestions (excluding reducing quantity of my daily treats!) would be greatly appreciated.

                      Cheers
                      C

Re: EM6910-Filters hold too much coffee???

                        Chauncy,

                        Relax about the coffee weight.
I use Silvia at work and Krups Vivo at home.
Krups double basket uses up to 15 grams of coffee and produces OK espresso.
Silvia double basket is much bigger. I did not have a chance to weigh coffee but based on the size comparisson with Krups I would guess at least 18-20 grams.
Silvia double basket produces excellent espresso...
However I never ever (4 years of attempts) was able to get a decent black coffee from a standard Silvia single basket (or from an interim sized basket either).
In my humble opinion, it just takes 20g of coffee to make a strong nice black - Silvia, Sunbeam(never had a chance to use) or anything else.

                        Cheers,

                        Viktor

Chuancy, Welcome to coffeesnobs! The em6910 does hold about 21gms in the double basket and about 10 in the single, but it is well priced, and makes a pretty good cuppa. The silvia has just had a price rise, Chris at Talk coffee has had a bit to say about the silvias price rise just have a read through Talk coffees heading in site sponsors.
                          Regards,
                          Marty.

A single shot of espresso made from arabica beans contains on average about 40mg of caffeine. Well below what a cup of brewed coffee contains.
