Re: So whats next after a EM6910
I think Iconiq is asking a non-brand specific question. Hes not asking about the next best Sunbeam but rather what machine, from any manufacturer, would be a logical upgrade from a 6910.Originally posted by MarcS link=1204205887/0#1 date=1204230929There isnt one as yet... maybe 12 months from now perhaps... but nothing in the horizon that I know about...

Whew. Guess you need to be posting in the pointy end section. Check posts there. I suspect something with maybe two boilers? One of the numerous E61 machines (ECM, Domobar, Makin, take a stab).
And Im channelling Mal:
You can get one of the many great machines from our sponsors! ;-p

I agree with shawn_low
Your next step is going to be quite a step financially me thinks to get any sort of major difference in your cup.
New you would probably need to go to the $1600 - $2400 mark I would think
Read some of the pros/cons of some others machines in the pointy end section, Im sure some others will chime in with their preferences as well, but from my not greatly knowledgable brain, I would think that just about anything below a base domobar would be a more sideways step at this stage (depending of course on your budget constraints as well)

Re: So whats next after a EM6910
What Shannon said.
I have an Expobar Leva and dont aspire to anything more and certainly have been content with that being my first machine.
I dont need some of the bells and whistles, its basic, its solid, its reliable.
Talk to the sponsors.
Discuss needs wants and budget.
You will decide whats right for you when you have worked those 3 things out.

Re: So whats next after a EM6910
Im with Thundergod. Why upgrade at all. Do you have too much cash? Personally I have a Silvia, which is from all reports an a par with the Sunbeam and dont see the need to ever upgrade. Will a more expensive machine make better coffee; I dont think so. So unless you are planning to open a café save your dosh and maybe put the kids through school and put food on the table then worry about the toys.
Im being a little oblique here after all who is happy with first set of golf clubs that you buy. The old ones still work, but there is always a better set that will hit the ball straighter and further.
After all that I suggest you wait for a new model Sunbeam or change to a Silvia.

Re: So whats next after a EM6910
Guess youd first need to identify what youre wanting from your upgrade - better espresso, more steam power, catering for more people, all of the above etc. If youre a espresso-only drinker theres not much point getting a dual boiler machine, for example.

Re: So whats next after a EM6910
Iconiq,
I agree with many of the above - the next step would certainly be a pointy end machine. HX or dual boiler.
Will it make better coffee than a Silvia or Sunbeam - possibly, but a Silvia and a Sunbeam EM6910 do a pretty good job too! And the person driving has a lot of say as well.
I upgraded from a Silvia to a Minore II and couldnt be happier. Like Thundergod, I no longer aspire to higher level machines. Im very happy with my kit now.
As for the advice to wait for a new model Sunbeam or go to a SIilvia, I would disagree strongly with that. Either is a sideways step for no real gain.
If the budget is not going to allow for a $1500+ upgrade, then stick with what you have, its a good unit.
Brett.

Re: So whats next after a EM6910
Iconiq,
Id have to back FB on that. Sideways steps are a waste of time in your situation, Im guessing, as you may as well keep what youve got. Then the only way is up! Might as well head toward a HX or DB. Like TG, the Leva is a solid machine and one I would be looking to upgrade to if I was going from a 6910/silvia etc. All the site sponsors have machines that cover this area VBMs, Expobars, Diademas, etc, etc. Check em out, have a play, see if its worth the upgrade.
I also dont feel the need to support any feelings of upgraditis since getting my Minore II, except to maybe a commercial machine for fun, or a GS3 if someone wanted to donate me one. But I love the play-around-ability of the Minore, so thats what I went for.

Re: So whats next after a EM6910
I thought that might come from you
If not I thought Lucinda might have a go at me for that... yeah I rate the MDF too... but, like my Rocky, itd end up being relegated to the decaf or for courser plunger grind once I get my next one... but I still couldnt part with it.
Id just have to have an MDF, PLUS

Re: So whats next after a EM6910
As lots of folks have indicated above already, you need to first identify what it is you want to improve, whether your needs have changed, would a better grinder serve you better and allow you to improve shot quality with your existing hardware, etc etc..... Its a long list and only you can provide the answers. Once you have refined and focused your requirements, it will be much easier to knock-up a short list of possible candidates. Some of our site-sponsors have got some fantastic deals going off right now so maybe if you can make your way to one or two of them in your neighbourhood, they will be able to demonstrate the pros and cons of various machines to help you towards a decision.Originally posted by Iconiq link=1204205887/0#0 date=1204205887The title pretty much says it all. Its not easy but it sure is a hell of a lot of fun.... All the best Iconiq

Re: So whats next after a EM6910
Wow guys, thanks a lot, I couldnt have asked for a better reply. There is a lot of thinking and reading ahead i guess. To be honest, I think Im sort of happy with the espresso from the sunbeam "can you read in the certainty???" but Im a little disappointed with the steaming ability. I have a really old sunbeam, a small crappy machine in comparison to the em6910, but with a little bit of playing, it makes better steam. Also, I’m a mine worker, and my family doesnt really appreciate the noise at 5 am, that the sunbeam sends through the whole house.
Ive had a few people say i should upgrade my grinder, but Im not really sure how much of an improvement it will make. Will I see the $ worth of improvement between it and say a mazzer? Ha ha, on that point, would a mazzer be the way to go?
Hmmm, to be brutally honest with myself, I really just want to upgrade because i know there is something better. Who can resist nice shiny toys?
Thanks again for all the feedback, I’ll put it to good use and let yous know what I end up doing!
