  • EM6910- Disappointed

Hi Guys, Just giving my 2 cents on the Sunbeam 6910.
I purchased this machine on the 25th of January, got it home and it looks goods and makes a great coffee apart from the noisy pump. I thought, ah well, i can live with the noise, makes good coffee :-/
The other day as i was removing the PF from the group head, i heard a sound from the group head like tin foil.....I had a look up there and the chrome plating on the colar is all starting to peel off. I was beside myself
I know its the low end of high end machines but in only 5 weeks and already things are starting to look crappy.....
I called up Sunbeam and the guy reckons thats the first time he has heard of that happening......Yeah right, i had to be the only 1 that this has happened to........Anyhow, he said they would most likely replace the unit for you as it is only 5 weeks old and this should not happen.
So, i drive all the way into Nth Melbourne (cause the other option was Dandenong....no chance >) and they said that they will replace the collar only and it will take from 10 -14 working days
When I heard that i was very disappointed......So i think i will keep this machine as a spare and buy myself something semi commercial...

Any one have any reccomendations on which machine to get for under $2500???

    Cheers.......

      Hi Clubbi,

Sorry to hear about the Sunbeam, but I guess thats the way with an appliance. Nevertheless, once repaired, youll be able to sell it and it will make a fellow CSer happy.

The great news is that pretty much everything is in range of your budget...Any Expobar, most VBM, Giotto, Diadema, Bezzera, Makin et al...

All terrific machines, all subtly different and Im sure that a number will be suitable for you. Its just a matter of talking pros and cons and helping you choose the right machine for your requirements.

My advice is do it right this time so that you never have to purchase again (unless you want to of course!!)

We have some great demo machines on the bench. Why not make contact and come in for a play?

      Chris

Personally for $2500 Ill go for the Diamond Italia which is currently giving a $200 rebate. So theres still cash for a K3T. Well, thats me...

this highlites a problem that specialist coffee machine repairers and sellers see everyday

the sunbeam is closer to a high end, entry level machine. it is still an Appliance
the new model has a different collar (improved?) to the earlier ones.
most of the equipment in this price bracket is made in asia to asian quality control and faults in plating is common
doesnt matter whose badge is on it

saying they are designed and engineered in Australia is pushing the usage of words and only confuses the customer

these machines are NOT made in Australia.

this is why the european machines are dearer
you pay for what you get

clubbi4 You cant be the only guy that it has happened to. I am the guy that has that title. I cant think of a time that I have had a complaint about an appliance from washing machines to a wrist watch that no9 one else ever complained. It must be a stock answer that they are told to use at their FOCUS meetings. Since Christmas I had hair clippers that would not cut hair, deep fryer that leaked oil all over the place when using the inbuilt oil filter, an electric jug that leaked water out of the water guage on the side, a Sunbeam Ristretto espresso machine that had a poisonous smelling odour in the water tank even after flushing with distilled water on numerous occasions and running the machine over two weeks. One could not drink the coffee as the smell and taste went into the coffee (wasted heaps of supermarket coffee!). a Rocky grinder that was stuffed after the first grind and I could go on. Google searches showed me that I certainly was not the only complainer with these appliances.
Anyway getting back to the chrome peeling. I believe from what I have read that the new Silvia models have a similar chrome plated plastic collar. I hope the chrome collar is better made than on the Sunbeam

One note: I dont remember a friends EM6910 being any louder than the more expensive HX and double boiler vibe pump machines Ive heard. If the noise was a real problem make sure you get to hear any machine youre about to drop $2k on before you part with the money. Theyll certainly be better put together and make better espresso though.

If youre looking for weight in a portafilter....you cant go past Rancilio and La Marzoccos...they are the 2 heaviest Ive ever picked up

The Makin had a pretty heavy portafilter from what I remember.

Hi Clubbi- The Minore II is a very good machine- twin boiler and has temp. control but the controller is more like a fridge controller than a PID. Street price is quite a bit better than RRP.

If you want twin boiler PID- Vibiemme have one coming here but its looking like it will be on the ugly side of $3k. The LaSpaziale Vivaldi II is also brilliant- but requires plumbing.

There are plenty of great HX machines- well worth consideration and discussion as well.

                          Re: EM6910- Disappointed

                          Hey,

yeah, like Chris said, the Minore II doesnt have a PID, more a temp controller, but some have been known to PID it.

If quiet is what you want, you might have to get a machine that can be plummed & rotaryd (or at least have the option for down the track).

Ive also got the LM pfs and I tell you what, if someone breaks into my place, its the first weapon Id go for. Its got some weight in it. Mind you, the Minore pf isnt the heaviest, but its not the lightest. I actually find its weight quite refreshing after using the LM sometimes.

And again like Chris said, there are a lot of other HX worth considering too.

                          YeeZa

Just to add, regarding build quality etc, I took the hood off the Minore the other day, and the thickness of the stainless steel housing (and the weight) surprised me Thickest Ive seen over some of the other prosumers out there. Its super strong, but probably isnt finished as nice as some of the other Italian ones (some sharp, not pointy, edges etc), but doesnt have as much plastic (if any) as SOME of the newer model prosumers. Expobar I think, went down the function over form in this machine. Of course it is all reletive to the eye of the beholder ...
Sorry, no definitives here, Id rather stay on the fence for now
