  • Feel like swapping my Silvia for a SB 6910

Call me crazy but I am wanting to either buy this machine or exchange with my Silvia.

Loved the Silvia but unfortunately so do my bush cockroaches who think the plastic tubes(steam and water tubes) taste like honey and chewed a few holes through them. I am sending my Silvia which is about 6 months old ( i think) to the repairers to be repaired and cleaned and then it will be goodbye (since i dont trust the cockroaches to leave it alone). The Silvia has been used approximately twice a day since bought new and only used filtered water.

My dh uses the EM6910 at work and i am really happy with the coffee it produces and i dont think cockys will get in it and no tubes to chew on anyway.

So I would be happy with a direct exchange of a fairly new EM6910(prefer red), or to buy a fairly new 6910.

Depending on the age and use of the EM6910 I would be prepared to pay between $250 and $450. Open to suggestions.

Where are you located? And how old is your Silvia?

I am at Buderim on the Sunshine Coast. The Silvia is 6 months old i think. I bought it soon after joining coffee snobs so i wonder how long ago that was. will find out.

        Re: WANTED: Sunbeam 6910

        hi bamboogal
most domestic machines have silicone hoses inside, getting a sunbeam wont fix the problem.
the 6910 has a silicone tube running from the 3 way solenoid to the drain tray, if you have a few cockys and dont backflush regular you have prob.

        same silicone hose

so if cockys love the silvia they will also love the 6910

you need some kind of pest control
baits under machine, gel inside machine, baygon surface around machine regular.
        keep machine clean

dont put cockroach powder inside the machine, the heat kills the powder and the powder kills the electronics

          Thanks Graham,

Ill have a second look at the 6910. I thought the tubes were contained within the unit more unlike the Silvia where they just sit in the water. The cocky issue is tough as the house is clean and the only time i see them is when they scurry away when i open the lid. I think they just like the constant water supply. Im buddhist also so it is a real struggle to eradicate them.

Nevertheless I do think the 6910 would be a better machine for our household.

            Re: WANTED: Sunbeam 6910

            Hi bamboogal,

Further to grahams excellent advice above......

The 6910 is full of electronics (unlike the Silvia which has none)

Cockies can cause damage to these.... but even more likely if they chew through a silicon hose and water or steam sprays onto the board (not very well protected at the base of the machine)..... bye bye board..... and the cost of replacement will be high (if even worth doing).....

Seems like a very backward step to me..... to swap a tough, robust machine like the Silvia for a light domestic appliance like the SB when you know you have an environmental problem......

Fix the problem - dont swap the machine!!

                Re: WANTED: Sunbeam 6910

Can I ask a quick question? Having used both the Silvia and Sunbeam (at work), is the Silvia a lot quieter? I was thinking of getting the Sunbeam, but Ive seen youtube videos of it and it sounds like a jackhammer! I need something that doesnt make too much noise for when I get up in the morning so I dont wake the wife...

Be careful. If you use Miss Silvia at home, you will fall in love. The noise, which is minor anyway, will be totally immaterial. I cant imagine falling in love with anything branded Sunbeam.

^ LOL! Nice description. After reading around, I think the Silvia appears to be the best bang for buck under 1K. This is going to be my first home espresso machine, and I cant contemplate buying anything less than a half-decent machine. Conversely, I cant warrant spending 1K or more on a proper machine, as the wife and I only drink a few cups a day and rarely entertain. However, we love our coffee, so it comes down to quality over quantity for us.

I take it the Silvia is a good choice?
