Not at all. It will only give you the flow rate of your pump.

I have read elsewhere on this forum that by engaging the steam switch you could then measure the water flow from the OPV return hose. Could anyone please confirm that this process is ok to check the flow rate?

    Cheers,

Doing OPV adjustments without having any backpressure (from gauge, blind filter or loaded basket) is basically meaningless.

I have a gauge for testing group pressure so depending on where you are, I could help you set you brew pressure .

Re: Gaggia OPV Mod - Clockwise or Anti?

I have had another go tonight.

I tightened the OPV two full turns (clockwise, tightening the spring) just to see what would happen. Virtually no flow so I turned off after 10 seconds.

I loosened (anti-clockwise) by one full turn, and now get around 100ml in 30 seconds.

So it seems that in my machine:

    - LOOSENING the valve INCREASES the flow rate and

    - TIGHTENING the valve DECREASES the flow rate.

Note I am doing this without a blind filter, I am simply hitting both the steam switch and the brew switch at the same time, as suggested in one on the threads and catching the flow from the return pipe into a measuring cup.

Next step is to see what happens with some coffee.

thanks...the mystery is why I was getting a higher flow rate the more I loosened the valve....when I went clockwise again the flow rate reduced

Is there ony one in Melbourne that I can take the machine to so it can be adjusted to the right pressure?

The valve going dowm means the screw adjuster is compressing the spring more so the OPV requires more pressure before it opens.

Left hand threads are almost always used for applications where the part would become loosened by movement with a normal right hand thread so I can see no reason why an OPV would ever loosen clockwise and tighten counterclockwise.

Hmmmm...have been happy for a while but lately noticed the shots coming through too quickly...after getting my Sunbeam grinder down to "1" and still getting watery results/15 second pours with a double shot I thought Id have another look at the OPV, this time measuring the flow right.

Started at 150ml in 30 secs....Half turn at a time, did two full turns anti-clockwise and ended up with 250ml in 30 secs....

Is there a chance that some machines are anti clockwise and others clockwise to adjust the valve, or could there be something else at play? When I turn mine clockwise the valve goes down.

I have the same confusion - CW or CCW? In the end I went CCW 270°. I am pretty sure I am getting better crema, but I still managed to choke her up a few times. Sure, this happens when going from batch to batch, so there is an element of adjustment required that I need to be responsible for (grind/tamp). But, I was expecting a bit more of a forgiving tolerance after the mod? Just wondering if another 1/4 turn might help? I dont have a blind filter for calibration, but Im happy to fiddle for a bit. Any advice?

where can i purchase a OPV + a silvia wand, ideally from the same place to minimise freight. Also a PID? BTW, what does OPV + PID stand for?
OPV = Over Pressure Valve - fairly self explanatory.

PID = Proportional, Integral, Derivative - control systems jargon describing the parts that make up a fairly simple, but widely used feedback system in a control loop. For more information look here:

<<<<<<<<<<< Coffeeparts sells coffee parts and PIDkits sells PIDs :P

Pedro will look after you for the Silvia bits and Jim will supply you with a brilliant PID kit.

Cool, thanks. Gave it a try and it seems to work better. It is still a bit bitter but I think I need to try some different beans.

Wrong way, you want to go counter clockwise to decrease the spring pressure, which decreases the OPV pressure setting. From recollection, about 270 deg counter clockwise worked for me, based on the flow through the OPV while using a blind filter basket.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

started a topic Gaggia OPV Mod - Clockwise or Anti?

Gaggia OPV Mod - Clockwise or Anti?

Iv recently bought a Gaggia Classic and on the weekend did the OPV mod. The original post with pics made it really easy to figure out where the adjustment is...but I have read a few threads on the topic and am confused about whether I should be going clockwise or anti clockwise if I want to *reduce* the pressure.

In the end wound it clockwise 360 degrees but Im not seeing any improvement.

    Can someone confirm please...

    Thanks
Working...
