  • Silvias Adjustable OPV

Hi all, 2 month old Silvia and Rocky combo. But learning fast from all this wealth of information on this site.

My Silvia model is the newer 2007 model.

I was wonder whether adjusting the OPV is worth it?

I hear that 9 bars in the group head is the ideal? why is that?

It looks fairly simple how to change... (untighten locking nut and screw other nut out to decrease pressure and then re-tighten locking nut?)

If I do this, does it void my warrenty?

Also I guess I have to get a PF pressure gauge from coffee parts to see what the pressure is?

    Thank you for your help.

      Hi Kasa,

On the older models that were set at anything up to 14bar it made a significant difference, read improvement, to what was in the cup. The shot will be nicer tasting, using same beans, etc, and it can be easier to get better extractions compared to if you have way too much pressure.

The first thing to do is to find out where it is set now, then adjust as and if required.
Depending on where you got yours from it should have been set by the supplier.

You might wish to check my post on a temporary fit brew pressure guage,
      http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1184639154/0#0
before you rush out and buy one from coffee parts.
But yes you do need some way to measure the pressure before you go adjusting things.

Cant see how it could void your warranty if you can show you were trying to adjust to 9bar.

      Regards
      Bullitt

        Re: Silvias Adjustable OPV

The 2007 model Silvia is POD adaptable, and as I understand it the specifications for POD machines is that they have 11 bar brew pressure, therefore all 2007 model Silvia’s should be set from the factory to around 11 bar. My 2007 model measured 10.5 bar with my portafilter gauge, which I adjusted down to 9.5 bar. Setting it to 9.5 bar static pressure gives you approx. 9 bar during actual brewing. Lowering the pressure by 1 bar required less than a 1/4 turn of the adjustment nut.

I did have, but just sold it a couple of weeks ago. Im looking at building a new better one, with liquid-filled gauge & needle valve to regulate flow, but havent ordered the parts yet.

Measured my pressure and it was 10 bars in the group head. Now I have put it at just under 9.5 bars.

                  Shots are tasting better too...

                  Very easy to modify
