Hmmmm, Im confused, IME real Turkish coffee is not made in a machine, unless you call the little pot a machine.

      Koffee Kosmo

      I agree with Greg,
I believe turkish coffee needs to be made in a Brik [I think thats what the little pot is called] and this is a stove top type device.
The beans are ground finer than for espresso and you end up with a very thicK almost chewy coffee.....I like it as well, but usually after dinner and with sugar

Putting a turkish grind into a silvia [or any espresso machine] will probably choke the machine or result in a very short shot.
At best you will get a ristretto, a great drink in its own right but not turkish.

With practise, your espresso shots will be so good, you may be able to convert your relos, but otherwise Im pretty sure, those Briks are very cheap [sub $30], so its a no-brainer to keep one on hand.

The "quality" grinder you buy for the silvia, will also be able to produce a turkish grind, albeit with a finer setting than for the espresso.
So wonderful fresh coffee: be it espresso or turkish will be at your beck and call..........provided you use freshly roasted beans.

The silvia is a great machine out of the box, AFAIK there are no commercial mods available [or required] but one of our site sponsors:
<===========Talk Coffee can supply it fitted with a PID.
[PIDs give superb control of temperature and are pretty extreme.]

Do I recommend a PID?.................absolutely, but I appreciated mine more because I spent some time developing my skills on the machine without one to start.
Give Chris from Talk Coffee a call.

The Turks call the pot an ibrik the Greeks call it a briki.

You make the coffee in the briki on the stovetop.

I tried grinding for turkish with my Macap and choked the grinder. ;D
Backed off a bit after cleaning it out and all went well second time around.

Theres a post on here somwhere with how to make one but I cant find it at the moment.

          Thanks for the input

I should have said when I first posted that my family have made
Greek/Turkish coffee all my life close to 50 years in a briki and we have serveral of them.
I wanted to see if one could eliminate the grounds the easy way.
Looks like I will stick to the normal way and try to convert the older relatives to espresso.

However a relative has contacted me from Sydney they are the Australian distributors of Elektra coffee machines ( I was not aware of this) and can pick one up at cost I like the Microcasa semi automatic.

The thing is they are both great machines one is 3 times the price and the Electra is like a motorbike you will be always polishing the chrome.

My style is industrial, functional, no nonsence just get the job done kind of machine. so I will probably stay with the Sylvia

Espresso is created at about 92C under 9 bars of pressure whereas Greek coffee is boiled (100C) without pressure, therein are some fundamental difference which will affect taste.

              Thanks for the plug Reubster,

FYI all we have decided to concentrate on two dual purpose boiler machines:

              [*]Vibiemme Domobar Vashetta (aka Levetta).
Our favourite compact machine- brilliant out of the box and with impressive performance. This is my travel machine  8-)

              [*]Rancilio Silvia with PIDkits PID
A great machine, dramatically improved with the fitment of a PID. We recommend the S3DC kit, with or without steam control from site sponsor www.pidkits.com. We will no longer be selling standard Silvias.

You order a kit from Jim, he ships it to us for you and you save on import duty and GST. We fit it to a new Silvia for you and you get the reassurance of warranty jointly supplied by PIDkits and ourselves.

However I have changed my mind on the Sylvia due partly to the overall cost to buy and fit a PID
Guess what I want now a Vibiemme Domobar Levetta it works out that I will get a better machine at the same or lower price that an upgraded Rancilio Silvia with PID

I can aford a Vibiemme Domobar Super Lever but I will at most only make 4 t0 8 cups a day for personal drinking and when we have visitors that may double (on rare occasions)

Can you advise me if the Levetta is my best choice we mostly drink milk based coffee now and I have the occasional short black and picolino style at the cousins coffee shop he insists I make my own coffee (Free Coffee but the drive is a pain)

When I have time may I call you sometime next week

                  Hi Cosmo,

Thats a brief for HX (or dual boiler if you must) if ever I saw one.

We have the Levetta and DS on the bench so you can see what theyre like side by side...

                  Looking forward to meeting.

                  Chris
