Hi John and welcome to CoffeeSnobs!

I suggest that to start with, you switch off the power and REMOVE the power plug, then:

Unscrew the top cover and on the top of the boiler, toward the front, youll see a thermostat with two terminals and a little red button in the centre. Depress the button to reset the thermostat, then pop back the cover and power her up.

If this was the cause, you should be able to hear her warm up in no time at all. If the problem continues you may need a more complicated (and more expensive) remedy.

Let us know how you go!

BTW John, count yourself lucky cos that circuit-breaker is there for a reason - to prevent overheating, and the fact it tripped means somethings amiss. The most likely cause for this is not refilling the boiler once youve finished steaming some milk. Make sure once youve finished steaming milk that you run the pump (activate the middle switch in the bank of three) until the boilers full (the pump will go quiet). If youre not sure about the change in sound, swing the steam wand over the drip tray and turn the steam knob on before doing this procedure; once water flows consistently from the wand the boiler is full - close the steam knob and youll hear the pump go quiet.

A boiler full of cold water is essential to cool the heating element down after its been heated up to 145C - failure to do so will trip the thermostat and eventually lead to premature element failure.

Glad it worked John and Ditto what Greg said - there are only so many times that fix will work! Also, dont leave her on unnecessarily, eg. overnight.

                Greg,

Are you saying that you dont need to open the steam wand when you re-fill the boiler? I have been opening the steam wand with the hot water switch on to refill after steaming since i got my machine. I was unaware that you could run the pump without opening it. Where does the pressure go when the boiler is filling? (excuse my dumb questions)

Re: Rancilio Sylvia No Heat HELP

The correct way to refill the boiler is to open the steam valve and turn on the hot water switch. That completely fills the boiler using the pump as gently as possible. Running the pump with the valve closed stresses the pump unnecessarily.

                    Thanks Randy,

I love your website by the way. It is where i learnt to backflush my silvia!

                    Cheers

Yep I normally open the steam valve when refilling the boiler for that reason and also so it cleans the steam wand out at the same time. Refilling can certainly be done without opening the valve (pumps are designed to create pressure after all) but when theres no need to then obviously you may as well avoid it as Randy says.
