  • Inside-reservoir water softener for Silvia

Hi - been wondering about these "Rancilio Water Softeners" that are available in the US -- eg,
    http://www.wholelattelove.com/Rancil...r_softener.cfm

Are they any good? If so, where can I get one in OZ? An old thread suggested Cosmorex, but they seem to be off-air. CoffeeParts dont list them.

    Hi Simone,

They do work and Cosmorex do have them. Looks to me that they might have ISP issues at present. Perhaps it may be worth giving them a call.

These water softeners do remove some scale from the water, but even then you will still need to descale every so often. They can be refreshed by soaking in salt water for a while every couple of weeks.

Many say that Melbourne water is terrific, but nevertheless, I run my water through a brita jug with a regularly changed cartridge before it sees my machine.

Yesterday I did a check, and lo and behold  , there was scale. I used Bomboras triple action product which works exceptionally well and dissolves scale allowing it to easily pass. Bernard has mentioned that straight Citric can lift plaques of scale which then cause problems in other areas...

After much flushing, all is clean again but Ill be descaling every year.

    Chris

        Hi Chris,

Yes, Ive heard Melbourne water is "good", but Ive used a drip filter for years, and its got this white crusty deposit round the water nozzle which I dont like the look of. I see the same stuff on the glass covers on my aquarium, and **nothing** Ive tried will shift that -- its like etched or something! So Ive been using bottled water from the supermarket... :-/

Still no Cosmorex website, so guess I will actually have to use the phone (eek) Though from what Kasa says I might have to wait anyway

BTW - Where would I look for evidence of scale?

            Hi Kasa,

was it the Rancilio one you got from Cosmorex? When I contacted them they said they imported the in-reservoir water softener as used in Diadema machines.

It was not an offical rancilio one, however cosmorex use them in the more expensive machines.

It fits perfectly into the tubes of the siliva.

Its also rechargable... put in salt water over night... *still need to try it out though*
