Please excuse the barrage of questions thats about to follow

Im curious about the mods available for the Silvia. Ive been reading about two in particular -- the OPV mod for models that dont include it, and the PID mod. Roughly how much do each of these mods cost installed? Which is more useful, and indeed are they worth doing unless youre very picky? Can both be done or are there complications? Are there other worthwhile (or more useful) modifications? And finally, what possible downsides if any are there?

    Phew!
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to CoffeeSnobs vector-director...... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Just did a quick search through the boards mate and discovered these three threads covering the topic. Theres way more than this to be found but these will get you started I think....

The PID mod is superb and I thoroughly recommend it.
Repeatable shots pulled whenever you want, and you can tweak it to get the absolute best out of whatever bean/blend you are using.

AFAIK the OPV mod is only necessary for the older Silvias [like mine], on the latest machines it is adjustable, but you would still need some means of accurately measuring the pressure if you were adjusting this yourself.

Basically, the best coffee is brewed at 9bar [that is the standard] and many have reported big improvements after adjusting their machines.

If you are buying a new machine, talk to Chris at TALK COFFEE [CS site sponsor]
He sells new Silvias, professionally fitted with a PID and with the OPV correctly set up..........could be just what the doctor ordered.

        Thanks guys.
Im hoping to pick up a second-hand machine. How much would I be looking at to get a PID kit installed? I have a soldering iron, how difficult and time-consuming are they to install?

          Hi vector-director,

<<<<<<< Have a look at PID Kits in the Site Sponsors.
          All will be revealed.

            Re: Silvia modifications

if you get a kit from Jim Gallt (site sponsor PID kits): very easy indeeed ..
it comes with instructions which are baby step by baby step and besides that, Jim is online almost 24/7 to give direct support if needed.
it is great that a "tech-not" like myself can put one on AND in such a way that it works a treat!!

good luck, and enjoy the journey!!

There is no soldering required with Jims kits -- they are indeed very easy to install, and well worth it!

For the curious, heres a picture of the innards of the current model. The OPV is facing the camera with the adjustment nut on the left.

Some people have claimed that setting this could void the warranty http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1207700559/5#5 ... the adjustment is shown in the manual with the warning that it should only be done by "qualified technical personnel". Not sure if something is missing from the box, but I couldnt find any specific warranty wording with mine -- but this seems like a fair warning not to fiddle if you dont know what youre doing.
