  • New Sunbeam 6910, Cant make a cup of coffee!

After many months of decision making, my husband and I (God, I sound like the Queen!!) went off to Hardley Normal and for the grand price of $700 got the package of Sunbeam 6910 and grinder 480. Brought them home, plugged in, did all the running thru of water etc etc. Now, weve had a little ol Saeco for about 8-9 years, so weve been making pretty good espressos, but we thought we would update to the twin thermoblock thingy.
Well, we started off on a fairly fine grind, using our usual Harris Espresso beans, and NO WATER would go through the group filter at all!! Gradually increased the grind, till I had it set on 15 or 16, and almost no pressure at all in tamping. Pressure gauge was up in red zone. Also noticed that the water temp is only about 66 degrees measured in the cup, just as it comes out of the group, (not through any coffee of course!) Is this too low?)
    Any help would be appreciated!!

Sounds like the grinder is the problem. If you still cant get a good pour at a coarser/coarsest setting, check out some older post on how to remove a washer from the grinder burrs.

Silly question....have you got the right baskets in? I.e. unpressurised baskets?

Ive accidentally used the pressurised basket and it hasnt choked the shot.

When I was using the 0450 I set it on about 13 so 15 or 16 probably is in the ballpark of the right grind size.

We all know numbers on grinders are irrelevant. It depends on how the collar was set from the factory and what number it was aligned with

Agreed but theres a reasonable chance that they are close to the same.

Ill go pull the Sunbeam out of storage and report back.

the proper extraction TEMP relies on proper flow...so get that right and the temp going through the puck of coffee should be fine.  It sounds like either your using the basket with the single hole in the bottom or its the grind setting....more experimenting needed.

              Cheers

PS.  Its a great machine once you get dialled into it

the Stale Harris beans wont help :-(

But it does sound like your grind is too fine... go courser and see how you go... trail and error, youll get there. Get the grind right, then go get some fresh beans - not from a supermarket!

Thanks Guys, for all your help, after Gavins super quick response, we did realise the grind was way too fine. We reset the grind up, and cleaned out the top burr. We were using the correct basket, and finally got a great coffee! I do think I might like to punch up the water temp a bit, the water temp measured in the cup is 66 degrees C, isnt that too low? So thats next on the list - coffee snobs rule, OK!!

Depends how you are measuring the water - once its in the cup the ceramic will soak up the temperature faster than the thermometer can measure it, even if the cup has been sitting on the cup warmer.

I wouldnt be worrying too much about the water temperature right now - most of us have never checked ours. If 66 C is the temp of the espresso in the cup, youll find thats a pretty good drinking temperature for a hot drink. Its far more likely that you need to adjust your shot pulling routine to the new machine. There are adjustments you can make, others with your machine will know a lot more about that than I do, I would however, look at sourcing some beans that are a lot fresher than Harris or any supermarket beans. The degree of staleness in them means that you will not achieve reasonable crema or body.

Keep trying and asking questions, you will get there.

Why are you concerned about the temperature in the cup? You should be more concerned about the temperature at the group. It has been proven that the sunbeam em6910 is one of the most stable domestic machines on the market!

Try Heating up the cups. Let some hot water sit in the cups prior to extraction.

Leaving them on the cup warmer dont work unless you have a massive commercial machine.

Even on a domestic boiler style machine, the cups doesnt warm up really well unless covered with a cloth.

Proven where? where are the results? Are they publicly listed? Id like to see it.
