  • Removing portafilter spouts Sunbeam EM6910 (etc)

I recall some EM6900/6910 users reporting problems getting their portafilter spouts off in order to remove their Graeme (black plastic insert for those who dont know the lingo ) and I agree that out of the box theyre far too tight to undo by hand. Ive had to do this several times to convert a bunch of new units to bottomless ones, and the easiest way I found to do this was lie the shaft of a big screwdriver in the channel of the spout, which gives you two long levers (the portafilter handle and the screwdriver) to apply plenty of force and you can just rotate the two (anticlockwise of course) and unscrew the spouts. This prevents damaging the outside of the spouts with vice jaws or the inside with the end of a screwdriver or something. Just make sure the screwdriver doesnt slip out.

This would apply to any other spouts of a similar design.

    Hope this helps someone.
    Greg

I broke the entire spout off awhile back so be careful.

Oh and speaking of spouts, any idea how to glue one back on? Food grade heat resistant metal adhesive?

Thats how I got mine off Greg, although I wrapped the screwdriver in a thin rag as I wanted to be sure it didnt affect the metal.  I think it has some kind of glue on it to keep it tight.  The instruction book says to use a piece of dowel but I didnt have any the right size.

Ive found that the spout is now fairly loose to get it back in position to pour into 2 cups though.

I havent attempted to remove the black insert yet (why is it called a Graeme?).

        Hi Ali

The manual says they use locktite when it is manufactured and force may be required. Some CSs report success heating the area first to loosen the locktite. Try leaving it in boiling water for a while.

I had difficulty removing mine to remove the black plastic insert. Apparantly it is there to keep the coffee from hitting a cold pf (I pre heat mine by flushing.) Try using a pointy threaded bolt of the correct guage to screw it in and remove it.

After removing the spouts, you should see the black piece of plastic extending out of the PF, squeeze the two sides and push it straight in.

At least thats how I did it I think....

Wouldnt have a clue, youd need to solder it probably in something food grade thats compatible with the base metal, so good luck. Ive got plenty of these as a result of this project so let me know if you want a replacement.

Graeme, its just a term someone came up with because the thing didnt have a name. Its so pointless its stuck! :

The name was actually suggested by the user called DIG.

Yesterday I took the graeme out of the PF that came with the new 6910(I use the old one that had already been modified).

I had no trouble at all undoing the spout by hand and the graeme came out without a struggle with no more than a firm push with a spoon handle.

                              Hey all,

I removed the spouts on the EM6910 portafilter handle as they were loose and to give them a clean. Now they aren't aligning properly - has anyone please got any helpful hints as to how to re-align them? Otherwise I might be in the hunt for a new portafilter handle!

                              Cheers
