  • Breville 920 experiment - un-upgraditis

So, I have tried a rare experiment. I sold my Expobar Minore 2, that I'd had for 9 years, but which was getting long in the tooth, and stepped down to a Breville DB instead.
    Yes, un-upgraditis!!!
I thought i'd briefly share my experience.
Firstly, I found the coffee great from the breville. I loved the fast heat-up time. I loved the shot timer. The steam was a bit slower than I was accustomed to, but it all worked well.
But....seeing it in the corner of my kitchen never made me smile. It had no character, less ritual.
After 5 months of ownership, I sold it on to a friend, replacing it with a second hand Bezzera Galatea Domus, rotary pump, from a fellow CS member.
It also works well. Very well. And it does it with style. And it makes me smile every time I walk in the kitchen, even if I'm not about to make a coffee.

I’ve had a BDB for closing in on nine years myself. I’m a little more cold and clinical about it.: -It works the way I expect it to work -fails the way I expect it to fail -and repairs the way I expect it to repair This puts it far away on the list of things in life that need to be dealt with. Perhaps there’s another machine out there that would bring me more joy? But I haven’t got motivation to begin searching, if such a thing exists. This could also because as I barista skills have advanced and moving into ever lighter roast regimes the flow control capabilities of this machine, that probably mostly go unused in the wider world of home espresso really shine. Very very few machines are as capable, when forsaking more traditional espresso, and moving out closer to the cutting edge. The field of potential replacement machines in this space is very very small. -Peter
