I have a 2004 Gaggia Classic, bought it new, served me well for many years. I have replaced minor parts over the years, such as the shower screen, shower screen holder and group head gasket, but it has largely been trouble free. In fact, in that time, I must have made almost 10,000 coffees, so it owes me nothing!

Over the last month, water has started dripping from the steam wand, despite the valve being fully closed. It's become an annoyance that I want to fix.

I'd appreciate some advice on the options below, or any other suggestions:
  1. Replace the o-ring in the existing assembly.
  2. Replace the whole steam valve assembly.
  3. Upgrade the steam wand to a Sylvia or similar (which has been on my to do list)
If #3, do I need to replace the o-ring or valve anyway, given that is where the leak is originating?

ps. on the much maligned Gaggia steam wand, by removing that stupid turbo frother thing and just steaming with the shorter attachment, I have had great results...in case some might be wondering why I've used a substandard steam assembly for the last 15 years 😀
