Re: EM6910..So who uses the single cup filter?

I use the single basket 95% of the time as I am the only coffee drinker in the house. Its taken me a while but I do get consistently good shots now. I do seriously up-dose though! Last time I weighed how much coffee was in the single, it came out at 16g (double in standard commercial espresso machine).

I have the opposite problem in that when friends come over and I have to use the double basket the coffee is not quite as good because I dont have time to recalibrate the grind setting for the double.

Ive been using pretty much only the single basket.

I find that a typical level-then-tamp routine fits more than 13g of coffee in it.

Its like a 14g double from which i pull about 30mls... effectively making it a ristretto (?).

Its just right for making flavourful lattes in 180ml cups.

If i want something stronger, i use a 90ml cup and add roughly an equal amount of steamed milk. Its so savoury and not bitter or sour at all that way.

With ~14g of coffee in the single basket, the puck expands until an imprint of the screw on the showerhead is visible on the topside when the puck is removed. I dont see any reason to updose (the DVD seems to show about 18-20g of coffee being pushed into the basket) as 14g is plenty for a single shot.

That said, tamping must be reasonably level or there will be quite a chance that channeling would destroy the shot (early blonding / gushing).
