Re: EM6910..So who uses the single cup filter?

Ive been using pretty much only the single basket.

I find that a typical level-then-tamp routine fits more than 13g of coffee in it.

Its like a 14g double from which i pull about 30mls... effectively making it a ristretto (?).

Its just right for making flavourful lattes in 180ml cups.

If i want something stronger, i use a 90ml cup and add roughly an equal amount of steamed milk. Its so savoury and not bitter or sour at all that way.

With ~14g of coffee in the single basket, the puck expands until an imprint of the screw on the showerhead is visible on the topside when the puck is removed. I dont see any reason to updose (the DVD seems to show about 18-20g of coffee being pushed into the basket) as 14g is plenty for a single shot.

That said, tamping must be reasonably level or there will be quite a chance that channeling would destroy the shot (early blonding / gushing).

I use the single basket 95% of the time as I am the only coffee drinker in the house. Its taken me a while but I do get consistently good shots now. I do seriously up-dose though! Last time I weighed how much coffee was in the single, it came out at 16g (double in standard commercial espresso machine).

I have the opposite problem in that when friends come over and I have to use the double basket the coffee is not quite as good because I dont have time to recalibrate the grind setting for the double.

Never use the single basket.... Could drill out the holes and use as a drainer in the sink... Actually not a bad idea ;D

Waste coffee I hate making two cups, as it means I have to have a week one.

A standard shot for me is the Double basket packed to the TOP, so the single is never used. Wife likes it weak... But then she knows what is best for her : If she does not make a LARGE mug, she often decants into a Coffee bottle in teh fridge and that is used to make Cold Iced coffee.

I just used the single basket for my first pull with the 6910......
Poured really quickly though, even though it sat within the optimum band on the gauge. My puck was quite sloppy also. Ive been reading that pulling on a 6910 is better when updosing, and I"m not sure I tamped hard enough. I did, however get a nice colour difference, bottom to top, a nice small crema on top.
I just bought a new Gaggia Baby Class and trying to getting used to it. I was getting pretty much the same results as you when I was trying it out last night. Fast shots, almost no crema and sloppy puck using either the double or single basket. Then I found a site today that had instructions on proper tamping technique. From my very first try, using the crappy plastic tamper that came with the machine and the single basket , I was getting a much better shot, a much better crema and a good puck (well it actually came out of the filter as a puck rather than slop). More importantly, the shot didnt taste bitter like my earlier attempts, and Im using 2 month old beans for practice. Almost good enough to switch to espresso rather than cappuccino.

I dont want to tread on moderator toes by mentioning a site/brand that is not among sponsors but the method described really made a difference and thats using a sub-standard grinder and tamper.

I always use the single, as I did not like strong coffee, and also I always wanted a coffee when no one else did so I could make one whenever I wanted just for me. I have no trouble with how my coffee comes out.

I also think the highlight is also making the coffee and with single shots you get to make more.

Not bad for a rookie Only espresso experience I have is making caps and lattes in a donut shop during high school :P

Will use the double tomorrow, but I noticed in my first time use flush through that the right hand side drips slower than the left. may need to raise one side of the machine?

I do have a question though, and slightly off topic - my steamer took a while to wake up when I turned it on to purge before steaming the milk. Is that normal?

Hi Shimmy, Making flat whites in my prefered 11oz cup with 3-4oz of coffee.
I started with the double basket but after a month or so was dissatisfied with the flattish flavour, the taste was ok but no complexity.
Changed to an 8oz cup with the single basket and 2oz of coffee, updosed of course. I am achieving much better tasting coffee. Greater complexity, the difference between a good coffee and a : shot. The best way to test how good the extraction is , is to drink a few restrettos. Youll very quickly determine which extraction is better.
My theory is that at the intial pour there is some very red dark coffee, followed by a tan , then a bit of blonde. The percentages of each, especially the dark red stuff is greater in the single cup PF because it has a funnel type outlet, whereas the double PF , more or less straight thru I find much more difficult to tamp without channeling and wasting half the extraction.
The only problem being the single cup is too short, so I just have to make another one 1/2 an hour later. No problem

I have my steam temp at max and the pump rate at -1ms (not the fastest, but 2nd fastest). I found this a good "middle ground" between wet steam and steam power, but YMMV.

I have also upped the brew temp by 2 but am noticing some bitterness to my coffees (latte) that is only in the crema, is this usual?

I always use the double basket. I have some ACF108 cups (300ml) as my standard cup, so need the double shot to ensure I get plenty of flavour (perhaps this is whats contributing to the bitterness?). If you can hit about 3 ocolck on the pressure dial, its about right (past 3 and it can choke, but anywhere north of 3 seems right). When I first got the machine, I was using the single basket but pulling double shots (and 60 in 30), not sure what I was on, but things have improved since then.

Gday Shimmy, welcome to coffee snobs!

The conventional wisdom is that a double basket is more forgiving of technique and results in a better flavour profile. I generally use the double basket and if Im only making one coffee and dont feel like a double, use the double spout and put half in the fridge for an iced coffee later on.

Of course, theres no rule saying you shouldnt use the single basket - my advice would be to stick with one while you get your technique for the new machine sorted out, then experiment with both and see what you prefer

    Cheers, Matt
