Just back flush it regularly. Otherwise pretty much leave it alone unless an issue of some sort raises its head. I backflush twice a week with one of them being done with a very small amount of Pulycaf. I pull the shower screen out once a month or so for a bit of a scrub and a soak in detergent if necessary. I’d suggest that you don’t descale it unless the machine tells you to (make sure you’ve got the water hardness setting correct to ensure it tracks usage correctly). The group head collar is far superior to the Sunbeam one so you won’t need shims at all, but obviously you will need to replace the group gasket periodically. The genuine silicone group gaskets seem to last at least a couple of years depending on level of use. As other things need to be fixed just search up video tutorials on YouTube to see if it’s something that can be done at home and that you’re comfortable doing it. I’ve replaced the 3-way solenoid in mine and it wasn’t too difficult. Seems like the steam and water valve o-rings are pretty easy to replace as well. Overall it was reasonably easy to get in to and work on. I wouldn’t say it’s more difficult than the 6919, just different. The one big difference is that there’s some more complex electronics in there, so you’ll probably hit a wall sooner than you did with your 6910.

Never tried descaling but there is a guy on youtube that does it by sticking descale liquid in the boilers while the machine is off through on the probe holes and siphoning it out.

In terms of general servicing, there are some easy ones to do DIY e.g.
    • O-ring replacement on probes
    • Pump Replacement
    • OPV upgrade
    • Solenoid Replacement
    • Group Head & Rubber Gasket replacement
    • Slayers mod, rerouting the hot water to the brew line so that you can flow control.
Any other servicing seems more involved. But happy to hear other opinions.

  • Upgraded from EM 6910 to BES 900 - tips on servicing

Hi all - I've had a Sunbeam EM6910 early model (like 06/07) with the older style steam tip etc that I just love and will be stored away for a rainy day. Over Christmas a friend of ours had a BES 920 he asked me to pull apart as it wasn't working. Turned out it just needed priming I think but we got to use it for a few weeks and I loved it. The steam wand was so much more powerful and drier. Plus the collar etc was easier to use. So I've had my eye on on Gumtree and finally picked up a BES 900 second hand last week. It's great and I love it too. My question is around servicing. I was quite confident servicing the EM6910, like turning it upside down and unscrewing and cleaning out the screens and group head(?) and also making shims to go above the seal when necessary (just out of a cereal box). Also, I descaled with vinegar regularly.

I have the service manual for the 900 but I know some snobs will have some better info (ie like the shims on the 6910) - what tips do you have for cleaning and descaling? Also does it ever need shims like the 6910?

    Thanks so much
Working...
