There's really no alternative to the Breville at that price point. Of course, if you are willing to spend a little more that opens up alternatives.

If the intended use is non-milk coffee drinks, then, a single boiler may meet your needs, and save you some money. A single boiler will still steam milk but the workflow is not as seamless as a dual boiler or HX machine.

Resale is also a consideration if you plan to upgrade in the future.

Lelit, Rancilio, ECM and La Pavoni make entry level "prosumer" machines.

Although I have a good HX machine, I wanted to try a dual boiler so I bought a BES920 factory second from the local Breville outlet shop for $650. It had 1 year warranty and apart from a couple of minor scratches appeared to be as new.
I have had it for nearly a year now, and have used it 1 - 3 times most days, and provided coffees for up to a dozen people at family BBQ's and dinners.
I have to say that so far, I have been quite impressed. It is very user friendly, and makes excellent coffee if I feed it good beans and get the dose/grind/tamp right. It is easily programmed for virtually all functions, including shot time or volume, but I prefer pull my shots on manual most of the time.

My only reservations are in regard to long-term reliability and longevity. It has a composite collar which will be more prone to wear than metal, and it is much lighter built than most other similar machines. One very annoying habit is that when backflushing with a blind basket, the group handle will unwind itself and fall off if it is not held in place. So far I have only done a couple of major clean cycles, but they get very tedious, having to stand at the machine holding the handle so that it doesn't come off.
However, at the price, I reckon if I get three years out of it I'll be resonably happy with the $ per annum cost .

Is that just the machine only or with the smart grinder as well? If the machine only that's not a very good price. I paid a lot less than that when bought my brother one earlier in the year. The 50% reduction is against the RRP and that's a lot more than most people pay. I paid slightly more than that for the machine and grinder, which makes me think that the deal you saw is just for the machine.

My impression from forums and owners is that it's a good machine, which is why I bought one for my brother. I'd be happy to have one. Have you been to Hardly Normal and haggled?

Alternative to heavily discounted Breville machine

    Hi everyone.
I’m considering getting a dual boiler coffee machine for home to make 2 coffees 2 maybe 3 times throughout the day.
Currently there is a Breville BES920 “the dual boiler” machine available for 50% off at $999.00
Any recommendations on this machine or any alternative machines in the same price range would be greatly appreciated.
