When you get the 870, there is a good chance you'll need to adjust the inner burr setting to get it to grind fine enough for espresso. Not all need it but most need one increment change to the inner burr.

Yep not being hot enough temp wise is often due to low milk temperature from the built in milk frothers and can be helped a bit by heating the cups with boiling water. But when it comes down to it the biggest downside is flavour in the cup. We had a few fully auto machines at work a Delonghi (average, warm milk) and a Melitta (slightly above average flavour and milk was hotter), but I couldn't drink the coffee from them after my home coffee game improved.

The BES 870 will produce coffee which is infinitely better than any fully auto, even the commercial Jura machines.

Thanks, roosterben - your comment re: auto machines addressed my biggest fear about them. I've also noticed that folks often seem to complain they produce a shot that's not hot enough...
I'm going to stick with a manual machine, then, so Santa's going to bring me a BES 870. Only $30 more than the Gaggia, and I'm sure I'll have a lot more fun playing mad scientist with it! I look forward to the 'trial and error' phase of figuring out the grind (my family, not so much - "Mum, Dad's had too much coffee again!")
    cheers,

Pretty much any fully auto machine like that will produce worse coffee than a cheap sunbeam machine and the lower end domestic ones are prone to getting blocked and can be expensive to repair.

Gaggia makes some good machines but these are other models like Gaggia Classic.

You could have a look at a Breville BES 870, Sunbeam EM 7000 or a Gaggia Classic (the last two need a decent grinder).

Noob seeks opinions - Gaggia Besana

    Greetings snobs,
Long time lurker, first time poster.
The time has come for me to upgrade from my crappy old Sunbeam machine, which has served me adequately if not necessarily well for 10+ years.
Have found what looks like a good deal on a Gaggia Besana bean-to-cup machine.
As a long-time latte sipper (in my defence, I didn't really do coffee for my first 35 years, until I spent a year in the US, so that's where I learned my bad habits...), I don't need many bells and whistles, just a machine that will consistently make a solid espresso shot to my liking.
Can't find any reviews elsewhere that do anything other than parrot the promotional material.
Does anyone have experience, good, bad or otherwise, with this particular machine? I recognise that Gaggia are a reasonably well-respected brand...is this one of their lesser efforts, or will it convince me I've been drinking rubbish for years?
    Thanks for your indulgence!

    cheers,
    IWLS
