A couple of questions: - does the pump run when you push the coffee switch? - do have the means to test the coil of the 3-way solenoid with an amp meter or continuity meter?

    Yes that’s correct.

Hi Joe, your photos appear to be private and unable to view.
Would be interested to see the internals of the gaggia.
    cheers

Thank you for your comment. I tried what you suggested, which was pretty similar to the priming process that I had been using. I continue to get only a dribble from the head. Here’s a link to some photos, which may help you see what I am dealing with:

Thanks again for any insights, Joe

One thing to try though if you haven't a) open the steam wand fully b) in coffee mode turn the coffee button on which normally runs water through the group c) to make sure you have filled the boiler run for 30 seconds or so. You should just get water running out of the steam wand but it will suck water into the boiler and fill it, then eventually water should run thru the group. This is often required with small single boiler machines that have been sitting for long period like the Gaggia's, Saeco Via Venezia machines.

Otherwise try to upload some photos to a Cloud photo service and link them here.

If you use an electric switch to run water through the group logically there should be a solenoid somewhere. Given the switch will enable the pump it must also open a solenoid to get the water going.

Help needed for very old Gaggia Classic

Sometime in the 1980s I was given a white Gaggia Classic espresso machine. I used it for a while but it got packed during moving, and for some reason I have not used it for at least 20 years. Recently, I remembered I had it and now I want to use it again.

The machine looks to be in very nice shape. I started it up and it still works. The boiler works well and produces hot water. The problem, however, is a common one: no water is produced during the coffee cycle. I tried the usual fixes (descaling, removing and cleaning out the shower head, cleaning the screen, and turning the machine on and off). None of these did any good. At best I got some drips out of the showerhead.

Based on all that I have read, It seems the problem is the solenoid valve. I thought I would try to clean the valve, and I opened the machine. I could not however find a solenoid valve. I expected to find it behind the big pump, but it is not there. Indeed, the interior of my machine looks very different than the versions of the Classic that I have found on the web, even the older models.

Does my machine have a solenoid valve? Regardless, can anyone give me any suggestions on fixing it? I tried Gaggia customer service, and it was not helpful. Even though I have gone many years without my machine, I am now dying to fix this machine and have a decent cup of espresso.

I would live to hear what you think. (I tried to upload some photos but the site will not allow me to.). Thanks, Joe
