  • Machine for an Airbnb holiday rental

I am setting up a house as a weekender and snazzy holiday rental. Does anyone have a recommendation for a machine for guests to brew coffee (other than a French press!)? I have some self interest as I'll also use the machine when I am there, so it needs to be able to produce an acceptable shot. I have a Breville Oracle Touch at home, which is super simple, but perhaps too fiddly for newbie guests - and expensive to boot especially if treated badly? In which case, a bean-to-cup machine? Or just stovetop etc?

    Grateful for your input.

I used to put a pressurised Breville there, but found I was just chucking away a lot of ground coffee as it was rarely used. But I do have a decent cafe within walking distance. Airbnb regs now with Covid say to leave no unopened food around as well.

As you say, it's too fiddly for people who don't know about such machines.

Now I just put a pod machine with 2 pods per adult per day. Again, pods rarely gets used - I think because they extract a whole cup's worth and decide to give it a miss. I leave one of those heating frothers as well, and fresh milk as it's a bit annoying to finally get to a place and then have to find a shop for milk.

I also find it annoying when travelling myself when they have a pod machine but don't leave pods.

When I see a pod machine in an AirBnb I spend 10 minutes flushing everything as concerned machine is risky to use straight up. My wife now insists on taking her own kettle when we travel by car as they look too grotty inside and says she has heard stories that travellers launder their underwear in them. I don't know if that is true but the inside of many kettles look terrible. I think hosts are trying hard to do the right thing by their guests but suspect some guests are gross.

Other things I recall with the Breville thermoblock machine - searching the bin for the basket they'd tapped out into it by mistake, and the steam wand was rarely wiped and purged. They're not snobs like us - pods are likely a step up and tolerable if you pick the brand & pod right. Not many know how to use a Moka pot either. Loo Loo's shack up the road from you is a nice outing with good coffee - I even suggest it for my guests and I'm right near The Fat Goose.

I feel like you're inviting misuse, waste and mess if you use anything other than a fully auto machine, or a pod machine, in an AirBnB.

Unless you're targeting a very specific clientele, most people see coffee as a consumable, not a hobby, and will treat it as such.

If you go the pod route, supply them with reusable and locally filled pod capsules, and provide a small recycling bin plus plenty of warning not to waste bin them. This is a good chance to:

        a) educate people about the reusable pod coffee market, and may encourage people with pod machines to consider it for home.
        b) promote a local cafe that does pod refills, and possibly get discounted coffee supply.

Fully auto don't make a good cup till the 2nd or 3rd cup, as the stale grinds take a while to flush through. Also the staling beans are difficult to adjust grinder for.

          Pod machine?
Or maybe a ese machine? Run a different basket and a grinder for yourself when visiting.

I had never heard of an ese machine - that would have been a great solution. As it turned out, I took the advice above and bought a decent enough automatic - DeLonghi Magnifica S - in the sales. If anyone is interested, after playing about with it (setting the brew temp to the highest of the 4 settings, setting the grinder to its finest setting) I can just about get what the Oracle produces on a middling day. I wouldn't be too sad if presented with a brew, and for most visitors I think it will be a wondrous cup. We are on a septic tank system and I fear grinds down the sink, so French press and moka probably best left hidden away.

Thanks all for the input - and once the plastic-y DeLonghi packs it in I might go an ese on a basic basket semi-auto.
