    Re: EM6910 Broken Portafilter Handle

Anyway my next machine is more than likely going to be an EM5900 which is so new it still hasnt hit the shops yet.
From my research it is a more basic version of the EM6910
Stainless steel thermoblock heating system, one piece design
    Interesting...

I thought the new models always had higher numbers.

I gather that the first number indicates the series of the machine, with higher numbers indicating better/more expensive, while the subsequent numbers indicate the model with higher numbers indicating that the earlier model was severely under-engineered and suffered an immense failure rate leading to the hurried production of a new and improved version

Quite like the look of the 5700, a few design cues there from the 69 series but also just a touch of Breville Ikon if Im not mistaken

Yeah looks like my good old Sunbeam brass & phenolic is on the way out as well....after a grand total of 2 weeks! My God! Cracks appearing on the black handle all over the place, and its not like I play baseball with the thing. Just the usual, lock into machine and remove afterwards.

Might have to fire off an email if things get any worse...

Why wait... Best to raise it straight away... May not get any worse for some time, and then when you report it; it could complicate the process.

Interesting... No our problem in some aspects, but what is your serial / batch number.. Would be good to compare with any others users that have the same problem.

I can say that after some 18mths mine shows NO sign of any stress fractures and I am a reasonable heavy user.

Lets hope you get the same service support person that Saambo got second time round.

Pics and keep us in teh loop.

              Re: EM6910 Broken Portafilter Handle

              Hi,

I realise that this is an old thread, but what happened to the OP happened to me today on my 17 month old EM6910.

After failing in my attempt to persuade the extended warranty people that it was a mechanical fault (as they only cover "electrical, electronic or mechanical faults), I have now emailed Sunbeam in the hope that they will take pity on me.

Otherwise its $90 for a new handle & a lump of redundant stainless steel.

Im a bit miffed that the warranty doesnt cover this, I specifically took out an extended warranty (which I usually dont bother with) after reading of past issues with Sunbeam machines (EM6900 to be precise) on this forum. Trust my luck to get a problem thats not covered! >

Serves me right for overloading the basket one too many times!

Has anyone else had this issue with the group handle recently? Or is it just my over-exuberance? :-[

YES... Sounds like it is caused by YOU and would suggest ya Collar will be stuffed as well.

SS where is teh lump of SS ???? Never seen any yet !!!!

Depending on where and how the break happen, it could just be a cheep handle from Coffee parts..

As per other posts and one just recently. Many faults are user generated and NO, warranty should not have to cover for that..

                  Re: EM6910 Broken Portafilter Handle

I know, I know. Im flagellating myself as I write!

I meant that Im miffed with myself, not the warranty people. It states quite clearly what is covered, I was merely "trying it on" with the warranty people when I phoned. Didnt think Id succeed really, and my fears were confirmed pretty quickly when I called.

I dont make a habit of overfilling the handle, I cant say Ive done it more than perhaps 6-8 times in 17 months. Thats obviously its tolerance. I dont think I really thrash the machine and I was just interested to know if other people have been harder/softer on the machine & got similar results.

SS where is the lump of SS ???? Never seen any yet !!!!
My bad that one. I initially thought it was an alloy, but the guy at my local service centre suggested I might get someone to weld a bit of pipe to the "stainless steel portafilter". Im no metallurgist & I just took him at his word. Its just shiny metal to me! :-[

Still it seems a waste to me to have a portafilter I cant use. I wont be able to bring myself to throw it away.

Anyway, Ill await the verdict of the Sunbeam people before forking out the $90 Ill probably have to part with for my mistake.

                  Cheers.

I dont know about that, How hard would you have to lock in a group handle before you crack the casting?

Was it dropped at all? That could do it but not just locking it into the group, surely :-?

Send a picture as I am sure that every one has their own thought as to where and how it has broken ?

Further more it will assist some of us in suggesting what sort of fix or NOT, might be able to be done.

PS. Usually a brass based alloy of sorts and then a chrome plating to give the polished SS look.

PPS. What is ya location ?

Some get thrashed and seem to keep working others appear to fail when looked at ???

However I have seen many that were described as well looked after and light use and I have been shocked at what I saw !!!! Total abuse

While I have seen the odd manufactures fault, where the casting etc was WRONG or fractured at the outset... Many more have been due to missuse and or What me ... Drop it ? No never :

I used to have access to a 6910 at my old workplace.
It got fairly well thrashed over the last few years.
It had a collar replaced at the 12 month mark and then went back on the bench for more abuse by the heathens that worked there.
Still, they never managed to break a handle.......... :

                          Well, theres a turn up!

Just this minute had a call from a very nice lady at Sunbeam who (in between being pestered by my 3-year-old son) asked me what happened, where it had broken & how long Id had it.

She then told me that theyd send me a new one, free of charge!

I didnt even have to bend the truth or turn on my pathetic/imbecile voice!

Ill post some photos in a while though, just for reference.

Cheers from one very happy man in Tassie! ;D

Great to know of your outcome.
Sunbeam has a wide product range, so they have the resources to have a customer service centre.
Sometimes solutions do not come straight away, but after some perserverence and intelligence on your part, you get there.
Well never know, there may be someone over at their department who may be a coffeesnobber or have a vested interest in keeping customers, so even though they may lose a little by replacing items now, they gain a lot more in the future when we buy more of their products based on customer service and good pricing, not so much the quality of the products.

                              OK, photos attached.

The brass (?) "stalk" that attaches the handle to the portafilter has sheared clean through.

And for the record, my wife complains that the coffee machine gets treated better than she does, and Ive never dropped her.

To be honest, even if one of my 3 little peace terrorists dared to play with the machine they could only drop it on a thick carpeted floor. The machine sits on a benchtop behind our 1970s stylee bar off our lounge room. The only way my wife would let me keep said bar was to turn it into a coffee bar!

                              Cheers all.

                                That I can repair

I would remove teh broken stud and then replace the handle with a custom wooden one

                                OR

Aprox $20 plus postage and if ya lucky - available from Coffee Parts.
