Looking at getting a decent espresso machine, was originally looking at the Rancilio and seperate grinder but a bit turned off by the need to temp surf/installing PID - bit too much fiddling around. So now looking at the Breville Touch BES880 (don't mind manual work but like some of the auto features) question is mainly will this machine will produce as good espresso with built in grinder as the Rancilio and decent steam for milk?

As far as the espresso part a more traditional machine probably won't produce much better coffee. A boiler based machine (Rancillio, Lelit) will produce better steam and foamed milk.
Problems with these types of machines isn't the coffee, but when they break down they aren't economic to repair. The "traditional" machines are all pretty basic, parts are relatively cheap of something does fail and they tend to last.
I'd look at a basic Lelit in that price range, or just get a cheaper Breville with a seperate grinder.
