    Hi all
Have decided to go with the Lelit Mara X coupled with a Eureka Mignon Silenzio.
Looking at a purchase closer to where I live rather than a Melbourne based store.
    Cheers

The BZ10 is a great little unit; compact but with plenty of punch.

The actively heated group head gives fast heat up times compared to an E61.

Combine it with a Eureka grinder and you within your 2k to 3k budget with some room for some nice accessories (tamper, milk jug etc)

We have both in stock to view if you are coming to Melbourne

    cheers

Out of left field, you could consider a level machine. Something like a La Pavoni Europiccola. Antony at Casa Espresso can help you out.

Lever machines are simple to maintain and service. Levers are best way to learn to make great espresso. Perfect for one or two coffees.

A lever is well within your budget and gives you spare $ for a high quality grinder. Ideally, the spend on the grinder should be nearly as much as on the espresso machine.

Rocket machines are one of the bests in my opinion. but i agree - if you have 3k to burn i think you could get some good deals by asking coffee suppliers to bundle a machine and a grinder.

I would stay away from Breville - as much as i like them; if you're spending over 2k on machine + grinder you can go into the prosumer range!

Service intervals will be depend on how meticulously clean the machine is maintained and the quality of your water.

Usually, once a year for routine maintenance ... changing gaskets, seals and lubrication.

If you are comfortable with a wrench, then, you can service an e61 group. How-to instructions and videos are available online. Service parts can be purchased as a kit.

Faced with a 4 hour drive to Melbourne each way, I would be doing my own servicing.

Thanks for the kind help everyone!

I will really just be making coffee's for myself. On the odd occasion I might make 3 or 4 in a row for visitors.

Hadn't really thought about servicing, how often does this need to be done?

If I could keep total price around $2,500 with a grinder that would probably be best. I see some online deals that have packages with both included.

From my limited research I have stumbled across a few machines that look like they might do the job. These include:

    - Breville The Barista Express
    - Breville The Barista Pro Express
    - Breville The Dual Boiler with Smart Grinder Pro
    - Gaggia Classic
    - Rancilio Silva
    - Bezzera bz10
    - Bellezza Chiara
    - Rockey Espresso Appartamento

My budget is fairly flexible, anywhere from $700 to $3000 would be fine (I know that's a big range). I'm just not sure if it's worth spending the upper amount of my budget, considering I'm a total newbie at this!

My favourite coffee to make is a short/long black along with a latte for visiting family. I'm after a machine that will last and not need to be replaced any time soon.

Any advice or help from others out there would be greatly appreciated.

I will also be visiting Melbourne next week, I'm a 4 hour drive from Melbourne and wondering if there are any shops others can recommend to visit for some more advice and help. Where is the best place to purchase a machine in Melbourne?

    Thanks in advance

    Adam

    Hi Adam,

We are Melbourne based and can certainly help you.

We have the BZ10 in stock along with a few other models in the Izzo (Vivi PID) and La Pavoni (Cellini E61) range that are worthy contenders.

Feel free to call or DM

    Cheers

The last 2 will go over the upper limit of your budget though when you factor in the cost of a decent grinder. For $3k I'd be looking at the Lelit Mara X + Eureka Specialita combo, or Elizabeth + Eureka if you're after a double boiler.

If you are 4 hours from Melbourne, servicing may be a consideration.

Do you have a service agent nearby or are you willing to service the machine yourself?

If your budget extends to $3k, I suggest buying as much machine/grinder as you can afford upfront. It will cost you less in incremental upgrades in the long term.

The last 3 on your list are heat exchange machines and all good choices.

The site sponsors is a good place to start for advice and hands on with some of the machines.

    Welcome Adam.
first step would be fill in a quote form below - then the site sponsors can give you some advice at what might work for your scenario.
Luckily there are a number of site sponsors in Melbourne you can go look at when you make the trip down.

Personally I would stay away from the Breville's (although they are good machines) they don't tend to last as long as the others. Keep in mind you will want to include a grinder in that setup too and the grinder is always the limiting factor. As in you can make good coffee with a good grinder and an okay machine, but not from a bad grinder and a great machine.
So I always recommend getting the best grinder you can and a machine that suits, rather than going overboard on a machine.

Some other things to keep in mind/answer might be - how many coffees do you typically make in a row? Do you often have guests where you might pump out 5 or 6 coffees at once? Or is it mostly just you?
