  • Breville dual boiler & smart grinder - funnel options?

Hi all, just upgraded to the Breville dual boiler and smart grinder combo, loving the upgrade, especially through lockdown!

The direct grinding into the basket is great, but tamping is a little tricky whilst minimising spillage. Plus a bit of overflow too. A funnel is a logical addition but it seems that there are a lot of compatibility issues with funnels and the Breville group head, also fitment without clashing with the grinder cradle.

I'm sure I'm not the first to encounter this! So are there any tips/suggestions on this? Is it just a case of dumping the cradle and getting a big funnel? Or are there some small versions that fit?

How many grams of ground coffee are you using?

About 20g, tamped down it aligns well with the Breville Razor, shots work nicely with good extraction time, volume and pressure. Just would be nice to reduce the spillage.

Looking at something like this: https://www.amazon.com.au/Espresso-M.../dp/B08773SNB3
But it wouldn't be able to fit inside the cradle, would need to remove it. Would be nice if there was something out there that was not so big, it just needs to be say 5 or 10mm high.

The magnetic short Decent funnel would probably fit what you're after I think. Not cheap though. When I was using the smart grinder and grinding for espresso, 20g wasn't enough to overfill the basket by much at all. Just a quick tap on the bench and it was all or mostly below the top of the basket.

I use this funnel on my BDB portafilter, the nice thing about it is that it sits with its lip on the 'outside' of the basket whereas others have a lip on the inside which creates a ring on the edge of the basket where coffee doesn't go...
I find this funnel works very well to grind into, and then WDT as well. But I don't leave/rest the PF on the grinder, as I just single dose and I hold the PF under the grinder spout myself.

My experience matches mthomas87 and I never really had a problem with overflowing. GoonSquad can you post a video or some photos?

Thanks guys, that does look like a nice funnel. You're right about not being cheap. videos of it in use look nice too, can also tamp with it in place.

I'm just experimenting a bit ATM and the spillage is not too bad, I just don't like the wastage or the mess! I've shortened the grinding time down so it is just slightly overflowing but might do a bit more tweaking to see if it needs any more coffee grinds. Cheers.

As a much cheaper alternative to the Decent funnel, this one looks promising. https://www.baristaspace.com/collect...mm-portafilter

          Anyone use their products here?

Update for anyone interested - I ordered the Baristaspace funnel. Quick delivery from China, only took 9 days to arrive with standard delivery. Looks good, fits perfectly with no slip, magnets hold it in place. It doesn't fit with the cradle in place but that's not a big deal, just removed it and rested the handle on a jar.

No mess now, no spillage. The funnel doesn't have an internal lip, it sits over the outside of the basket which is perfect. I can tamp through the funnel as well. Overall it's a winner. And $30 USD incl shipping or $40AUD, compared to the $156AUD for the Decent funnel.

I'm now using 22g which would not have been possible without the funnel.
