  • Breville dual boiler bes920bss problem

Hi guys I've had a dual boiler bes920 for around 2 years now along with a smart grinder pro.

I drink flat whites so my routine is to make an espresso with the double shot basket with around 20 grams of coffee for a 40 gram extraction.

However over the last few months whenever I have made an espresso the extraction is always way too liquid and I am getting like a 1:5 extraction rate giving me like over 100 ml liquid for each coffee.

I know nornally the rule is grind finer. So even when I put it to the finest possible setting of 1 it is still giving too much liquid.

I know it's not stale beans as I've tried fresh beans from multiple locations however the same thing happens.

When I first purchased my machine each time I would put different beans I would have to adjust the grind size to accommodate for the changes which is how it should be. However no matter what i put in it I am getting the same result.

I had first thought it was the grinder so I had that replaced a month ago with a brand new smart grinder pro. Same thing still happens

I called up breville and I had to take it to the repair centre in Balwyn, Melbourne.

The machine spent nearly a month there as they are so busy. They've told me to come and pick it up because they've fixed it however nothing has changed so I don't know what they have done.

I asked them to email me what they have done to repair the fault to which they didn't respond.

Does anyone know what the problem could be?

    Hi Gfunk

My amateur guesstimate on your situation

If grinder ( as you suspect) - then a good clean of the burrs, possible shim to allow to grind finer if required and adjust and re zero burrs to KNOW that they can grind fine enough.

Perhaps the repair shop did those things?

Sorry not sure how you trick a smart grinder pro to go below the 1 setting but normally you adjust the grinder until the burrs just touch (chirp) and then back off?? ( always with caution and no beans)

The other possible culprits are tamp prep and unlikely -----but too much Pressure blowing your puck apart or possibly the preset slower preinfusion is missing causing your shot to see full pressure from earlier on ---- so check your Preinfusion settings/timings and make sure your gauge doesn't see more than 10.5 ( and 9 ish ideally) Hopefully you can work on one thing at a time to diagnose this issue . Cheers

As above, sounds like grinding too coarse. The pro has adjustable Lower burr from memory so you can check the zero point. If you’re prep etc is unchanged then it must be the grind. Double check your pressure but if it’s gushing out it’s likely not triggering the opv setting. Cheers

Thanks for your help guys you've got me confident it's not the machine. I took out the upper burr and the metal wire handle and adjusted the upper burr to make it finer ( I didn't know I could do this)

I just thought by adjusting the grind level using the digital knob did all of that.

As it was also a brand new grinder and was doing the exact same thing as the grinder it replaced I just thought it has to be the machine

By making the manual adjustment on the upper burr it has definitely made a big difference and its now extracting properly and reaching 9 bars of pressure which it wasn't getting to before

        Thanks again
