  • Gaggia Classic Steam Knob Mod

I havent read anything on this in these forums, but Ive always found the steam wand on the Classic a bit small and the smooth hard surface a bit difficult to grip. Not that it was any froth-stopping obstacle, but definitely room for improvement.  When I first got mine a couple years ago I slid a half a dozen black rubber o-rings over it to create a better grip.  It looked pretty cool too.  But still, holding the pitcher in the right hand and doing a wrist-twisting backwards grasp on the knob with the left hand was awkward and sometimes difficult to get the initial twist.  So I started brainstorming and looking through my "bits and pieces" in the barn workshop for ideas.  Heres what I came up with.  It was simple, works great, and looks pretty good too.  Its a black plastic cap from a gas jug, slipped over the steam knob top first and pushed on until it snugs up.  Then I glued on a round, brushed nickel plate that I believe was from a ceiling fan light kit.  Now I have a nice large knob thats easy to grip and adds some turning power and more finesse over the steam control.

You can buy the cap without buying the whole gas jug.  Most home improvement stores sell them as a replacement kit, with a spout and cap.  The nickle plate may be more of a challenge to find.  Maybe a lighting store, or you could improvise something else.

I had been using a Casio dive watch that has a timer with preset.  A few month back I decided I needed something better.  I looked around for a reasonably priced countdown timer that could be preset in seconds, preferably with two or more presets (I time my bean grind), but  I didnt have any luck.  I settled for this stainless steel timer that I found at Canadian Tire in Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia on Cape Breton Island for about $10.  No presets, and can only be set to count down minutes.  But it will count up seconds with the large start/stop button, and it has a large display. Plus, it looks good with my setup.  I set it beside my tamper for the picture for size reference.
