Re: 58mm non-standard baskets?
Oops -- other way round -- the "aftermarket" spring is the heavy one -- the Rancilio spring is a feeble little thin thing to go with the ridged Rancilio basket. :P

So ezralimm, yep Synesso singles arent 7g but even the tiniest Rancilio basket (which almost has a flat bottom ie hardly any centre depression) started at 8g.
Simone, you may want to try to pick up either some ridgeless baskets or (cheaper) a weaker spring such as the one used in Rancilio portafilters.
Greg
Nice comparison greg.
Ive decided to stick with my basket. Went out and got 160ml cups instead. So nowadays, instead of having a ~220ml morning cap, id have 2x160ml lattes
Gives me more art practice anyway...
The 15g shots split very nicely into two 160ml cups imo.

Re: 58mm non-standard baskets?
Not so sure about this -- my Rancilio spring is clearly a heavier gauge than the "aftermarket" one.
Also the property of metal that makes it "springy" is not generally enhanced by deformation, so there may be a limit on how much of this kind of tweaking youll get away with.

Re: 58mm non-standard baskets?
Since the spring is nothing more than a bit of wire bent into a hexagon or octagon, it is simple to make it stronger or weaker with a pair of pliers and a couple of minutes.
Pop out the spring. Bend it more circular (same diameter) for a weaker spring, more angular for stronger. Re-install.

Re: 58mm non-standard baskets?
Hmm -- I do have a Rancilio PF -- it sits on the bench now Ive mostly switched to the nudie -- so I could just swap the springs!
I didnt want to do this before because I thought the Rancilio spring was weak because it was old and crappy -- didnt actually occur to me that it was a design feature :P
TG, tried the single basket as a basket remover -- turned out mine wasnt good for that, either ;D

You can also use a single basket instead of a spoon (they have to be good for something).

Re: 58mm non-standard baskets?
I have a double ridged LM basket and I find it easy to use a tea spoon for basket removal(A screwdriver being exactly what Ive been using to get my ridged Silvia baskets out of my new bottomless PF, whereas the non-ridged blind basket comes out no problem. Funny thing is, I never even noticed the blasted ridge until I went and looked just now!)

Aha -- a mystery solved -- thanks GregOriginally posted by Greg Pullman link=1216744096/0#2 date=1216774996So if you use any ridged basket in a portafilter designed for a ridgeless basket youll need at least a screwdriver to remove it.

Re: 58mm non-standard baskets?
Youll find that problem to one degree or another with any ridged basket, be it Synesso or otherwise. The 6910 baskets are ridgeless so the portafilters have a strong spring, whereas the Synesso singles (and many others) are ridged which require a less strong spring. So if you use any ridged basket in a portafilter designed for a ridgeless basket youll need at least a screwdriver to remove it. You could use a ridged basket in your 6910 pf but would need to source a weaker spring.

58mm non-standard baskets?
I was wondering where I could find some small 7g baskets for my EM6910.
The included baskets are great, but 15g of coffee in each "single" shot gives me the jitters, and isnt suitable for some stronger blends especially when i make my morning cappuccino (splits nicely for two cups though!).
Ive read somewhere on this forum that the Synesso baskets are almost impossible to remove without breaking a nail.
Does anyone have any experience with 7g baskets that will fit nicely on the EM6910 portafilter and seal properly on the group head?Tags: None
