  • BES870 solenoid seals

I am in the process of replacing a 3-way solenoid in a BES870 for a friend. The original one burned out due to water leaking into it from the plastic tube fitting on the top of it. As far as I can tell the only seal in this fitting is an "O" ring in the top to the plastic tubing. There is nothing between the fitting and the metal threaded section at the top of the valve and I was wondering how this seals - does it just rely on the fitting screwing down firmly against the top of the threaded valve stem or should there be some seal or sealant used here?. Nothing is shown on any of the parts diagrams I have looked at.

Can't say I know either way, but given the colour of that plastic I'd replace it as it doesn't look like it will stay together for much longer

There's a small black o-ring that seats inside the threaded top of the valve. It seals into a small nipple in the centre of the plastic piece when it's screwed into place. Can't remember what size it is, think it's either a BS006 or BS005.

Regardless, the plastic fitting is worn out on that valve, it would be unwise to use it again. The nipple will have degraded and may not seal into the o-ring properly anymore. Your only choice is to replace the complete solenoid block assembly as Breville have never sold this fitting as a spare part and if you order just the three way valve, it doesn't come with a new fitting.

Thanks for that info noidle, it's just what I suspected. The owner purchased a new solenoid valve but it did not come with the fitting as you said and half of the nipple was broken off on the original fitting. The o-ring was missing but probably fell out on dis-assembly. I did an online search for just the fitting but could not find it listed. One place had a similar looking part described as "Elbow Tube 1 for part 144" P/N SP0001406 for some of the other 8XX models but I did not check to see if it was available or would fit this solenoid valve. I have re-fitted the new solenoid with the old fitting after tightening it down firmly but carefully and it does seem to be sealing but probably will not last. I would not be particularly happy returning it in this condition.

@l3n - yes, the fitting is in poor condition but much of the dis-colouration is probably due to rust staining from the nut on the top of the solenoid which appears to have had water leaking onto it for a long time
