  • Barista Express Pro problems with Grind

Beans are Black Betty from Peaberry.

Ok...so got the machine for the Wife and ran with Dual-Wall 2 cup basket. 18.5gr/Burr on 3/Grind on 1 and Double shot. Works ok but sometimes water does not make it through to the cup about 10% of the time and have to make a new cup. Manageable but the Wife likes the coffee.

Experimenting in the Single-wall 2 cup. Aiming for 36gr out after the first drip comes down based on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0g8umpINGQ&t=531s

I seem to get 10-15 seconds no matter how much I reduce Burr/Grind and finally dropped Burr to 1 and Grind to 1 and I got 36gr in 25 seconds. Coffee seems reasonable at that point but little room for experimenting as it is the lowest setting.

Is this me? The Bean? Surely that can't be normal?

    Appreciate any advice....NichoUnited.

Learn to use the single wall basket.

Its the bean. When were they roasted?
The Barista Express should be able to grind fine enough without going to the finest setting.

Interesting! Roast date was I think 11th November but started using maybe a week to 2 weeks later?

They just put the price up $5 per KG so probably a good time to switch and try a new Roaster.

I use the express Bes870 and find that adjusting the top burr down by one unit at a time and raising the inbuilt adjustment to the maximum and then decreasing as testing works for me. The instructions specifically say to only adjust the top burr down by one unit at a time. At "burr to 1 and grind to 1" I suspect there may be misalignment.
Once the "sweet spot" is found small inbuilt machine adjustment is required for different beans or aging of the beans but I have never had to adjust the top burr again.

            Appreciate the feedback!

I borrowed a manual grinder from my Brother.

18.5gr in and got 28gr out in 30 seconds using the default 2 cup setting.

I then went manual with 17.5gr and let it run to 35gr out and it did it in 25 seconds.

Both times the pressure was up towards maximum but this is just a case of playing with things but more importantly, it confirms my inbuilt grinder is the problem so will take it back to the repair place and see if they can fix it.

            Will keep you posted!

Soooo....finally got around to getting the machine back to get fixed. Turns out they replaced the Grind Stone and all working good again and enjoying my coffees!

Really appreciate the support on here so thanks!
