  • Breville BES860 trips RCD when pulling a shot

As in title. The machine is nearly 9 years old (well out of warranty), and it's served me well so far.

It was working great until a couple days ago - when I tried to make my morning coffee and it tripped our RCD. All the other functions (grinder, warm-up, hot water/milk wand) work fine. But as soon as I start the shot it'll trip after 5-10 sec.

I took the machine to a friend's house. His house has no RCD in the fuse board, so I got one of those portable ones (the kind you use for camping etc) and plugged that into the wall socket, then the machine into that. I was able to successfully do multiple shots without issues.

Obviously something is wrong here - I guess my fusebox-mounted RCD at home is more sensitive than the wall plug kind?

I know my way around a multi meter, are there any common components that tend to fail in these machines that I could take apart and test?

Hmmm, sounds like it could be the 3-Way Valve solenoid coil breaking down.

Don't know what spares availability is like for these machines but worth trying to locate a replacement unit, maybe the complete valve ass'y...

The portable unit is probably 'out of spec' and no longer trips at the prerequisite safety value of leakage.
These RCD units should really be recertified on a regular basis to ensure compliance...

Dimal, you absolutely nailed it. The machine finally completely gave up yesterday (no water dispensing out of the group head, but the steam wand + hot water dispenser work OK).

I took apart the machine and at first glance couldn't see anything wrong. Except I popped off the two terminals on each of the solenoids. One measured 2.5 K ohm, the other measured 8+ M ohm.

I took the pump / various connectors out, and extracted the solenoid / valve assembly. Attached is a photo of what I found.

Anyway - is there any way I can replace the solenoid part only? I can see that the "whole unit" (i.e. both the solenoids + valves) are available as a full unit, but these are close to $200, I'm not sure it's worth sinking that kind of money into this machine considering its age.

Is it possible to make out any of the manufacturer's data on the coil?
Even the voltage and VA rating would be helpful...

Hey sorry to butt in on your post. I have a similar issue. My bes860 will completely power off when trying to grind or extract. Milk wand works mint. If I power it back on after it powers off it will work fine to finish the grind and extract. Upon making the next coffee same thing again. Will power off completely or it'll work fine. I replaced the solanoid assey thinking it'll fix the issue. But alas it has not... Wasted 150$.

Is it something as simple as a sensor triggering it or a capacitor?

Thanks noidle22, I've just been in to the local electrics shop but can only find a 1.5 farron 250v CBB20.
I don't think this will be suitable.
Do you know where online I could source one of these. Unfortunately my internet skills are limited.
I did find this on a website called aliexpress.
              https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005...74709121%21sea
But again I don't tend to shop here so don't know if they are a gimmic?

I order mine from RS Components, the ones I've used are on backorder but one that is available is part number 871-2451. Still a 10 day delay.
Most electronic shops should stock a capacitor like this though, you just need to make sure it has an X2 suppression rating. This is usually printed on the side of the capacitor, or the shop should be able to advise you.

My BES860 has just started playing up after many years of faithful service. The machine will shut down during a grind, during extraction or during steaming. Reading the posts, would you recommend changing the capacitors as you’ve previously mentioned? I can’t solder, but a person at work can. Another silly question, are they obvious when looking at the board?

              Many thanks.

None unfortunately. I have ordered a replacement assembly from Outwest Coffee. It’s in transit now so will install it when I get it and report back.

Benadam I can’t help with this unfortunately. I am only proceeding with my valve block/solenoid replacement because I have visual confirmation that mine had failed catastrophically. When you say powers off does the machine power off? In my case, I found the machine would trip the RCD for my whole house.

Ok. I ended up buying a whole replacement “valve block” which includes both solenoids, associated piping and even the metal bracket. Not cheap but minimal screwing around. While I was at it I replaced all the seals and o-rings I could get at too.

Machine runs as good as new now. Thanks to everyone who helped!
