on that note, dont burn out your element on the new ones too.... you end up changing more than just the element

Yeah I forget to mention that. The new ones dont have replaceable elements. Ya gotta replace the whole boiler. Very spendy $$

Old Silvia is like an old Holden. Ya can get bits for em at the general store.

New Silvia is like a hyundai. Use it till it breaks then throw it away n get a new one. well maybe not that bad eh..

So hang onto your old Silvias.

Dont let it get ya down.

Think of it this way... I make about 4 lattes per day. If I bought them at a shop they would cost $3.20 each so a total of $12.80 per day, $4672 per year

But they only cost me around 50 cents per cup to make or $2 per day, $730 per year.

Thats a saving of $3942 per year!!

So even if I had to replace my expensive (only $168 plus my labour) boiler every year, and spend a few extra bucks on various other little maintenance items Im still waaaaaaaaaaaaay in front and I get to enjoy superb coffee drinks anytime I feel like it.

I reckon thats a pretty good deal, even if my new "improved" model Silvia is a "disposable" one

            Re: Silvia Cosmetic Issues

I seem to recall reading about a service offered by one of the site sponsors where they modify the boiler of a new Silvia to accept the old replaceable element - which would make the equation even better 8-)

That would be a good deal, but I havent stumbled across that info yet.

Coffee parts list the whole boiler and element for $168 plus GST so its not really that expensive

                  Gday Mal,

These days the only silvias I see are the new ones we fit a PID to...Most of the action is with the Levetta and for good reason IMHO.

For those who need a referral, Ill provide Mr Fixits (hes in Melbourne) details via PM...I last recall paying around $140 for a boiler repair inc the labour to remove and replace it. I guess if youre prepared to do the job yourself, a new boiler is not too much more

                  Chris

                    Re: Silvia Cosmetic Issues

I recall being quite disappointed in the presence of the plastic group surround on the new Silvia when it came out and there were comments about how long it would last. Looks like we know now :

Having said all that I think the Silvia is a very solid and well-made machine and hard to beat at its price point for quality and performance. It would still be something of a semi-indestructible tank even if it does now have plastic bumper bars!

Yeah i am disappointed about it since we pay a decent for the machine where as all the parts are solid untill you get to the bit that cops the most abuse (save the element / boiler) you would think they would keep the ssteel there something that can take alittle more of a beating.

But as you said, Its a very well built machine and i still love my machine, (even the plastic flaky bits). It even keeps up with my coffee addiction, even saving up to PID it sometime soon!

                        Re: Silvia Cosmetic Issues

Old thread which Ive just stumbled across .. but I have read elsewhere that the new plastic shrouding is in fact an improvement over the old metal shroud as it has better heat-retaining qualities (acts as a thermal insulator) and its the same shroud as used on the full commercial models. Not everything plastic is crap -- think of vinyl records, CDs and DVD/Blu rays. Wouldnt be without them!

                          Re: Silvia Cosmetic Issues

My new model Silvia appears to use the "cheaper" grade stainless coz magnets stick to it
On mine a magnet does not stick to the side panel or top but does stick to the new style drip tray cover, so maybe a more durable material was chosen there to resist scuffing.
but I have read elsewhere that the new plastic shrouding is in fact an improvement over the old metal shroud as it has better heat-retaining qualities (acts as a thermal insulator)
I had the same thought myself as I tried to rationalise why they used a plastic shroud, combined with the stainless cover above the group head, I thought the two would create a kind of micro climate, but no excuse for the flakey chrome issue.
