  • Double shots on Breville Double Boiler - help

    Hi all

I am a newbie so please go easy. Looking forward to learning more now I've joined here.

I've upgraded to BDB this weekend after owning the POS that is Sunbeam Barista Max. It's already shocked me how much a half-assed espresso on the BDB is an improvement on the Sunbeam.

Anyways, I seemed to have already got a handle on a single shot with fresh roasted beans (not supermarket).

However I am completely struggling with double shots. The pour is so quick - grind is fine (tried anywhere from like 16 down to 1 size) on the Breville Smart Grinder. I'm using the Single wall basket.

I understand "CUP" equals "SHOT" so I'm using 2 cup basket, 2 cup button. Is that correct?

I've also mucked around with different tamps - no luck.

I'm sure it's something obvious. What is the problem here?

this is normally the reverse problem that most people have - larger double baskets are usually much more forgiving that the single haha
those 1 and 2 cups buttons can be programmed for either time or volume (inaccurate) so don't mean much until you know what their programming is
are you using scales to measure input versus output weight? it is easier, imho, to just use the manual button to start with a set of scales aiming to double the input weight of coffee over 25-30 seconds and then when down pat, you can tinker from there
you may find yourself needing to adjust in the inner burr on the SGP (see https://coffeesnobs.com.au/forum/equ...rt-grinder-pro) now that you are presumably using the non-pressurised baskets with the BDB but I would make sure you know inputs/outputs as above first
make sure you are tamping level and with approximately the same amount of force each time (then when you have the basics down pat and still struggling with consistency search for WDT tools)
ask any more questions if needed, many love the BDB on here, myself included

Are you using pre ground coffee or do you have your own grinder? If you have a grinder is it the Breville Smart Grinder?

When you say "the pour is so quick", how fast is it? How much liquid comes out? Are you pressing and holding the two-cup button or are you just pressing it once and releasing it?

I've just got the BDB myself and I've found it very forgiving. The default preinfusion (low pressure wetting of the puck) makes really bad channeling less likely. The BDB default is 7 seconds pre-infusion I think, so the pour shouldn't start for around that time if you've pressed and released the 2-cup button. If you press and hold the button you'll be bypassing the pre-infusion so it will go immediately to full pressure. If that's what you've been doing, try just pressing and releasing the button rather than holding it down.

The default time for the 2 cup button is 30 seconds from the start. Most of this will be in the manual, which also has some tips for making coffee.

You've said the beans are fresh, so that's probably not the problem. If you're getting way too much pouring out, it could be that you're grind is too coarse or there's something wrong with the puck preparation.

Thanks. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. It pours over 30 seconds, starts pouring approx 7 seconds in. The end volume is about 120 mls. So it's quick, certainly much faster than my old machine.

This is at grind setting anywhere from 5-1 that I'm getting this result. So does this mean it's to do with the tamp? I am also not measuring out grind.

I press once and release, no holding of the button.

I've only used the manual button so I can't say for sure. I think you can stop the pour at any time by pressing the one cup button again.

All I can think of is the grind might be off - too coarse. Yet you've said you were successful with the small single basket, so it's a bit of a mystery. How much coffee are you using with the larger basket? I think Breville recommends 19-21g or so.

What are you changing about the amount of coffee going into the double basket vs the single? Sounds like might not be enough in the double

Make sure you're using enough coffee for starters. Ideally you should weigh it, but if you can't then filling to the rim of the filter basket before tamping is a good start. If that's not the problem you might have change the macro adjustment on the upper burr carrier in your grinder. There's instructions on how to do this in the manual. If you do adjust it just make sure you only move it one spot before trying it again. Repeat if needed.
