Glad to hear you are making progress. It sounds like the main pump is not priming with the 6910. You may be able to make an adaptor to the water tank connector to force prime it with a large syringe. If you can get it going you will at least have a backup if the 7000 does fail.
    Cheers

    Hi again, Xanthine,

One problem solved: when trying the swapped over seal in the EM7000, I accidentally used the group handle from the 6910. For some reason, it doesn't seal as well as the correct one. One difference I noted is the rim of the basket - the 6910 basket has a raised ridge whereas the 7000 basket has a smooth curved top. When I used the right group handle (or, more correctly, basket), I started to get nice, clean pours without anything spilling down the side.

So, for now (fingers crossed!) it seems to be OK. I *still* get the strange pump sound (hard to describe... sounds a bit "tinny", not very loud) on the first pour but then I don't hear it again for subsequent coffees (I normally do 3 in the morning, about 15 mins apart). Some sort of other trouble on the horizon, I guess.

As for the 6910, the main pump runs but nothing makes it through to the hot water spout (which I always try first after filling it with water). I just get the very loud, dry, pumping sound. I get steam, so there must be a blockage somewhere between the tank and the main pump, I guess. I'll open it up over the weekend to see what I can find.

Again, thanks for your help and suggestions.

    Joachim.

Can you see where the water and grounds are coming out from? If it is from the seal area you should be able to see it running down the outside of the group handle. I am reasonably certain the seals are the same for both machines.
Another thought is that the pipe between the brew thermoblock and the three way solenoid valve has snapped -they are prone to breaking close to the tb. Is the pressure gauge registering anything?
Could you also give more detail on the 6910 blockage - steam or water, pump sounds etc.

    Thanks Xanthine. Some further developments:

I've got an old EM6910 which I use as a backup. It now seems to have some sort of water blockage (sigh), but I know the seal is good becase I replaced it not long before I stopped using it. I swapped the seals over and two things happened: (1) My first pour was pretty poor... the pump still made some strange sounds but at least there was no grounds. Then I realised that the grinder had been adjusted for a plunger (ugh!). I adjusted for a finer grind and then (2) all hell broke loose! The 2nd attempt gave me water and grounds spewing all over the place.

    So my questions are:
    1. Is this still symptomatic of a seal problem? Are the seals compatible between the two machines? (They look the same).
    2. If it's NOT the seals, what else could it be? I've checked the basket and it looks OK.

I really wish I knew what went on behind the group head but it's a bit of a mystery to me so I'm at a bit of a loss. Maybe I should try to find out what's wrong with the 6910....

Check your group head seal for splits. It would be best to remove it first then work your way around it, gently flexing the lip outwards and looking from the inside. Also inspect the basket for cracks and make sure the group handle tightens fully with the handle at 90 deg to the front of the machine. It may need shimming with cardboard washers if it does not tighten correctly.

EM7000 - Grinds in coffee / pump problem?

Hi Folks. Recently I've started getting grinds in my coffee using my 4-year old EM7000. I've also noticed that the main pump has been making strange noises. These issues may be related. So I have 2 questions:
Firstly, what's the mechanism by which grinds end up in the cup? Surely the basket filter is the filter, irrespective of what the pump might be doing? I don't understand how this is happening.
Secondly, the strange pump noise typically only happens first cup of the morning... then it seems to get better. I can't help thinking that its on the way out or something. How hard is it to replace? (I'm reasonably mechanical... I replaced the steam pump on my old EM6900).

Thanks for any and all suggestions/comments,

    Yokki
