Delighted to hear you discovered a simple solution. Appreciate the update.

Well thanks everybody for the replies.

The problem has been rectified, and you'll all think I'm such a noob. I had a dual wall basket in the group head rather than the single wall. No idea how it came to be swapped out, and I was looking at the dual wall version I had in place all this time and thinking, yeah that's the right one (wrong!)

Anyway, tonight I found the single wall version, looked up the manual and realised it should be the one I'm using, switched it and voila, perfect crema, perfect puck release.

I'll get my coat on the way out haha

Cheers again, esp tompoland for the detailed suggestions

Delighted to see you have posted again Richiek65 . Not delighted to see that the problem persists.

I suppose in one way it's a shame that it didn't make a difference in that you would have found the problem and a solution. On the other hand, you may find that the actual problem/solution might be an easier fix.

The two symptoms of the problem that you mentioned were:

    a. Too much crema
    b. A super dry puck

    Some questions:

Q1: are you still getting an excess of crema?
(Too much crema goes with beans that have not degassed enough but in your case if this is still happening over an extended period of time with multiple batches of bean that are at different stages of degassing post-roast, then something else is causing the excess crema)

Q2: is your puck still dry and hard?
(Having too much coffee in the basket can make a puck drier and not enough water can have the same effect)

Q3: what is the grinder you are using and how old is it?

If you can confirm that those two symptoms are still present then let's see what happens and the Woolies Water.

If the WW does not fix the problem, the next step would be to upload a video of your puck prep and the pour showing the bottom of a naked basket/portafilter (wife/husband with a mobile phone, upload to your YT account and post the link here).

Richie, I'm super interested to find out what the issue is and there are a bunch of incredibly knowledgeable experts here so I'm confident we'll crack it.

My guess at this stage is that something gone wrong with the Breville or the grinder during transportation.

Well I went back to the old house and filled a 5 litre container from the tap, didn't seem to make a huge difference. Trying some filtered water from woollies now and will see how that goes

Agreed. A change in water is probably the biggest variable that has changed.

Easiest diagnostic is probably too grab some Pureau water from Woolies and see if it goes back closer to normal or not

    Weirdness since moving house

    Hi all,
    New member here.

Been using a BES870 for the last couple of years without drama. I loved how the biscuit of grounds would drop out of the basket cleanly with one knock. We've just moved to a newly built house and now the grounds are like concrete and no amount of knocking will cause them to land in the knock box. I have to dig it out with a spoon every time. Also, the crema now produced is massive, very big bubbles that remain with the cup, almost looking like sea foam at the beach after a stormy day .

No settings have been changed, the beans are from the same bag as the old place.

Our new place is connected to town mains but also has recycled water for toilets and laundry, surely they haven't connected the kitchen taps to recycled water as well?

Or is there another likely issue?

    Cheers,
    Richard
