Thanks mate.
I ended up removing about half the coating down to the metal. There is the black plastic coating, and underneath a light brown filler that's quite powdery.
I'm guessing with exposed metal it might be more prone to oxidation or scale or something, but I'm not too fussed as I will replace this machine eventually.

Breville BES920 Flaking Group Head

That is very normal, happens to most BDBs. I think it's a plastic coating over the cast aluminium of the group head. You can scrub it back with a wire brush, but as you say you'll need to keep doing it periodically. I've never bothered.

Tronn this video shows how to replace the grouphead collar, which involves unscrewing the grouphead.

Yeah I might try and cleaning some of the flaking part with a wire brush. My concern is once something like this starts flaking it's easy for water to get underneath and continue to bubble and flake.
I think the long-term solution is to replace the group head. Any one have an idea on how tricky that is to do? I'm not super technical with dismantling coffee machines, but if there's a video guide and all I need is a screwdriver I guess I could do it?

Yeah you want to get rid of that somehow for sure. I just had a look at mine and it's totally smooth and clean so yours needs to be sorted. It looks like it's a coating of some sort over metal so you might just be able to remove at least the flaking part of it using a wire brush, metal scourer, sandpaper or wire brush fitting on a Dremel or similar. This would obviously be the cheapest option so could be worth a try as the only other option looks to be a new group head as you've said. I gather the machine is no longer under warranty?Originally posted by Tronn View PostHello fellow snobs.
I was doing a routine clean of my BES920 and after taking off the shower screen, I noticed that the black piece under the dispersion screen is starting to bubble and flake. Bit hard to take a clear photo, but I've attached the best photo I could.
Now I'm not too fond of the thought of melted paint/plastic in my coffee, so wanted to see if anyone knew if this piece is replaceable without replacing the entire grouphead? Looking at various parts lists it looks like the "Group Head Collar Service Kit" which replaces the entire thing is like ~$200 which seems like such a waste for the small bit I need replaced.
Any help would be appreciated.

it looks like the inner shower screen which is a $16 replaceable part or you can go an aftermarket brass one which you will never have to worry about again for around $50
